Jets - Dolphins: The Lay of the land
If there is one this the Miami Dolphins have done this season, it’s show no mercy to teams that are struggling. With that in mind, we forgive anyone who believes that the New York Jets are in for some trouble when they host Mike McDaniel’s men on Friday evening. It’s worth noting that the Dolphins (7-3) haven’t beaten a team with a winning record since Week 3 of the 2022 season, howeverv, they are in fact 12-5 against losing teams since then. Where the home team is concerned, the Jets (4-6) are not doing well at the moment and to compound the issue they’ve just benched their backup quarterback, Zach Wilson, who will now be replaced by Tim Boyle. In terms of form, the Dolphins are fresh off of a 20-13 win over the Raiders, while the Dolphins come into this one following a 32-6 loss to the Bills, their third consecutive defeat. Kickoff at New York’s MetLife Stadium is set for 3:00 p.m. ET.
The Dolphins are basically good at everything
While one might be inclined to say that the Dolphins haven’t performed well against the better teams, the reality is the Jets are in bad shape at the moment. For starters, they have allowed 40 sacks, while putting up an average of 270 yards and 15 points per game, both of which rank 30th in the league. What about the run game you ask? The Dolphins have allowed just 3.8 yards per carry which is seventh in the league i.e., don’t expect a lot of joy for the Jets. That’s of course before we even mention the fact that the Dolphins posted 31 sacks and three interceptions last week.
In total, the team’s defense ranks in the top 15 in both passing and rushing yards allowed. Then, there is the offense, which has scored the most points per game in the NFL with 30.5, is No. 1 in passing yards with 291, and No. 2 in rushing with 143. At the center of those numbers has been quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has thrown for 2,934 yards - third in NFL - and receiver Tyreek Hill who has been unreal. In his second season in Miami, the former Chiefs star has more receiving yards across 10 games (1,222) than any player in the Super Bowl era and has nine touchdowns to show for it.
OK, but surely the Jets have a hope. Right?
To be honest, while it would be surprising if the Jets could get the win, it wouldn’t be a shock. After all, this is a team that’s 3-2 at home, has beaten the Bills, and is the only team to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles this season. That’s all to say that the Jets can play ball. Yes, it’s true that the offense has been misfiring, but credit must be given to running back Breece Hall who has amassed 554 rushing yards on the season so far with an average of 4.6 yards per carry which ranks 4th in the NFL at the moment. Interestingly, Hall has also registered 296 receiving yards, while wide receiver Garrett Wilson has logged an additional 651 yards.
All of that said, where the Jets are actually quite solid is in their defense which currently ranks 4th in the NFL in yards allowed per play (4.9) and fifth against in pass defense (178.5 yards per game). Indeed, New York has 16 picks to their name, with Jordan Whitehead nabbing four of the team’s 10 interceptions, something that will be of interest when considering that Miami’s Tagovailoa has thrown eight interceptions so far. Then of course, there is cornerback Sauce Gardner, arguably the best defensive back in the NFL right now. If there is one player who’s has a shot at containing Tyreek Hill, it’s got to be Gardner.

Jets - Dolphins: The Prediction
As stated above and cemented by the odds, the Jets are the clear underdogs in this one, and while that doesn’t always mean the outcome is certain, we’ve got a hunch that the Dolphins are going to destroy them. When you consider the fact that the Jets lost 32-6 to the Bills in their last game, a team that is terrible, this week’s matchup does not bode well. That’s before we consider the fact that Boyle is 0-3 as a starting quarterback. If you need more perspective, then consider the idea that the Jets have scored just nine touch downs this season, while the Dolphins scored 10 in their 70-20 demolition of Denver back in Week 3. Ultimately, we expect this to be a one-sided affair i.e., a win for the Miami Dolphins.
