Update:

The Philadelphia Eagles are out for revenge at Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans, two years after they were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs in their last appearance in the NFL’s championship game. However, a bad omen is the pregame decision they have made about which jersey they will wear at Caesars Superdome on February 9.

Which team is wearing white at Super Bowl LIX?

The Chiefs revealed on Monday they would be wearing white at the upcoming Super Bowl, which should boost their chances of becoming the first team in history achieve a ‘three-peat,’ past experiences suggest.

How are jersey colors decided in the Super Bowl?

The Eagles will officially be this year’s ‘home’ team, which alternates between the AFC and the NFC from year to year. As a result, they have been able to choose which color jersey they will wear, and have opted for their traditional green, leaving their opponents to take to the field in white.

The same thing happened at Super Bowl LVII, which saw Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Co run out narrow 38-35 winners in Glendale, Arizona.

That reinforced the belief that wearing white is a lucky omen in the Super Bowl, which the Eagles have given up due to their choice of uniform.

Super Bowl winners: white jerseys vs non-white jerseys

Of the previous 58 Super Bowls, the eventual champions have worn white on 37 occasions (almost 64% of the time). And it has become a growing trend in recent years, with teams wearing their traditional colors winning only three of the last 13 Super Bowls, and four of the previous 20.

That includes Andy Reid’s team, who wore red to defeat the San Francisco 49ers 12 months ago. The Chiefs' dominance has been such in recent years that they don’t need lucky omens to emerge as they winners, and means the Eagles could probably use all the help they can get.
