Update:

Three months on from the decision to fire former head coach Brian Callahan, the Tennessee Titans may finally be closing in on his long-term successor.

After going 1-5 at the start of the 2025 season the Titans parted company with Callahan in October, leaving his former assistant Mike McCoy to lead the team on an interim basis. The Titans finished 2025 with a bleak 3-14 record on the season and will be looking for a big improve for 2026.

On Tuesday CBS Sports reported that the Titans will interview former Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett on Friday. He spent nine years with the Cowboys but has not held a head coaching role since 2019.

What happened to Jason Garrett?

Still only 59 years old, Garrett has been away from the locker room for a long time. His playing career began with the New Orleans Saints in 1989 and he played for a succession of NFL teams, largely as a backup quarterback. His most notable stint was with the Cowboys from 1992 to 1999.

After retirement Garrett joined the Dolphins as a quarterback coach, before returning to the Cowboys as offensive coordinator in 2007. He ascended to permanent head coach in 2011 and remained in the role until 2019, winning NFL Coach of the Year in 2016.

Across that nine-year spell with the Cowboys Garrett went 85-67 and managed three seasons with 10+ regular season wins. In that time Dallas won the NFC East three times. However he never made it beyond the divisional round of the playoffs and was eventually sacked by team owner Jerry Jones.

Since his Dallas departure in 2019, Garrett’s only coaching role was a brief but unsuccessful stint as the New York Giants offensive coordinator (2020-2021). He has been linked to multiple college jobs but has not returned to coaching, instead becoming a regular member of NBC’s NFL coverage. A move to Tennessee would be a brave way to make a long-awaited return to NFL coaching.
