Patrick Mahomes buys part of Kansas City Current: What other pro sports teams has he bought into?
With a growing portfolio of businesses and sports franchises, it’s clear that the Chiefs star has a lot of love for his city and the teams that represent it.
No stranger to investing in other sports franchises, the Chiefs star has now made yet another foray into the ownership world and it appears to be a significant one in terms of the sport and league in which the team operates.
Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes joins ownership of Kansas City Current
According to an announcement from the team on Tuesday, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will join the ownership group of the Kansas City Current. With the move, Mahomes becomes the second NFL player to have equity in an NWSL franchise, following Michael Schofield III’s investment in the Chicago Red Stars in 2021. The former league MVP joins a group that is led by Angie and Chris Long and will also include his wife, Brittany.
“I am thankful for the chance to join my wife as part of the Kansas City Current’s ownership team,” Mahomes said in a statement. “Brittany and the Longs have done an incredible job building a world-class organization. I am excited to join another championship-caliber club as it continues to make history.” Meanwhile, Brittany herself expressed her elation about the new venture saying she “thrilled to make this a family affair.” ...He has been a huge supporter behind-the-scenes,” she said in the team’s release. “His passion for the Current is undeniable and I am glad that he will be with us as we continue on our journey to become the best in the NWSL.” In addition to his wife, Mahomes’ new business partners also offered their endorsement of his latest move. Indeed, Angie and Chris Long spoke of the signal caller’s effect on Kansas City itself. “Patrick is obviously a once-in-a-generation athlete and someone who has had an immeasurable impact on the Kansas City community. Working with Brittany has been a blessing. We are elated to now partner with Patrick too. The Mahomes are truly a remarkable family.”
What other teams has Patrick Mahomes invested in?
As mentioned above, Mahomes has been here before. The Current will in fact be the third team that has added to his ownership portfolio. Prior to this, Mahomes had already been building capital on the Kansas City sports scene by establishing himself as part owner of the Royals in MLB, as well as MLS’ Sporting Kansas City in 2021. Where the Current are concerned, they are actually an NWSL expansion team who played their first season in the league in 2021 and finished up fifth with a 10-6-6 record under first-year coach Matt Potter. They then went one better, by making it all the way to the championship game this past October where unfortunately, they lost 2-0 to the Portland Thorns. This is all to say, it’s a team that’s going places.
Regarding NFL matters, Mahomes must now prepare for the NFL’s post season, after concluding what has got to be considered an MVP level season. Not only did he help the Chiefs clinch the No. 1 seed in the AFC with a 14-3 record, but he also led the league in passing yards (5,250) and passing touchdowns (41). Again, that’s all to say it’s a team that’s going places.
