Update:

Super Bowl fever hit Philadelphia the moment the Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship Game and will now continue for a good while longer after Nick Sirianni’s team convincingly defeated the Kansas City Chiefs in New Orleans to win Super Bowl LIX.

Chaos on Broad Street, downtown Philadelphia

In the immediate aftermath of Sunday’s game, a considerable number of Eagles fans raced down to Broad Street to celebrate, turning parts of downtown Philadelphia into chaos, with traffic in some areas brought to a standstill. Not that that’s unexpected…

Ahead of the game, rumors had hinted poles in the city would be greased to make them harder to climb (yes, really), which (but reportedly did in New Orleans).didn’t actually happen

As a result, some fans just couldn’t help themselves and had no other option but to climb said poles, traffic lights included, to let out their excitement and joy. Clips have inevitably started doing the rounds on social media.

Climbing on things appears to have become a common theme. One police car was reportedly destroyed, while not even an ambulance was spared. We’ve also seen some clashes between police and fans, fireworks being lit in busy crowds and objects being burned, including Chiefs jerseys. There are, as ever, often a minority who take things too far.

Tragic incidents mar Philadelphia celebrations

Philadelphia has become both famous and notorious for such scenes after important wins for the Eagles. While the vast majority of the celebrating is good-natured, there have also been some tragic incidents in the past, which we have thankfully yet to see after this year’s Super Bowl.

Following the NFC Championship victory against the Commanders, 18-year-old student Tyler Sabapathy sadly died after climbing and subsequently falling from a pole. Additionally, two people were shot during the celebrations, although both survived, others were stabbed, and police offers were assaulted, according to reports.

Philadelphia mayor pleads with Eagles fans

Philadelphia mayor Cherelle Parker had previously pleaded with fans to behave responsibly if the Eagles took home the Vince Lombardi trophy.

“Please, Philadelphia, I implore you as your mayor: Do not climb light poles or anything else,” she said. “I know this comes up every time we have an outdoor celebration after our Philly teams win, and I get it. But folks, climbing or attempting to climb up a light pole, or a bus shelter, or really any structure for that matter — it can lead to tragedy.”

The Eagles' victory over the Chiefs clinched only a second ever Super Bowl, seven years after their first.
