Andy Reid sends strong message to Mahomes and Chiefs after upset Super Bowl loss
Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City spectacularly failed to clinch a ‘three-peat’ by losing convincingly to the Philadelphia Eagles at Super Bowl LIX.

The Kansas City Chiefs had high hopes of becoming the first NFL team in history to win three consecutive Super Bowls but, to the huge surprise of many, failed miserably in New Orleans on Sunday, losing convincingly to the Philadelphia Eagles.
Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes had one of the worst nights of his career as Eagles counterpart Jalen Hurts clinched his first championship ring, winning the game’s MVP award in the process. After the game, coach Andy Reid acknowledged Mahomes and his teammates had had a “tough day”, and confessed he and his coaching team also had to share the blame for things going wrong.
Andy Reid laments Chiefs' “tough day”
“Today was a tough day. We really didn’t really play well in any of the phases. We didn’t coach good enough. They did a nice job."
Reid was, however, defiant in defeat. The veteran coach praised his team for their efforts over the season and promised the challenging experience would make them stronger.
“I’m proud of our guys, though, for the battle and the fight they put in throughout the year and all the games they’ve played here over the last few years. My hat goes off to the guys for that.
“We’ll learn from this. Like most games here when you don’t do very well, you learn from it as a coach, you learn from it as a player, and you move on.
“It’s going to hurt. You get this far and you don’t play as well as you want to. It hurts.”
Chiefs coach: “It starts with me”
The 66-year-old was also clear about where things went wrong for his team, starting with his own decisions from the sidelines.
“There were too many turnovers and too many penalties. Against a good football team, you just can’t do that. Vic Fangio does a nice job with that defense. They played well. They’ve got good players, a good scheme and they executed better than we did. They coached better. It starts with me. They played better.”
The Chiefs’ failure to win means the search for an elusive Super Bowl ‘three-peat’ goes on. Back to square one in the 2025 season.
