Two teams - Team Ruff and Team Fluff will scrap it out for the highly prestigious Lombarky Trophy with defending champions Team Fluff hoping to make it three wins in a row. The pups taking part come from all parts of the country - 122 dogs from 67 shelters nationwide plus a few of their feline friends, kittens who provide the entertainment in the famed Kitty Halftime Show.
As for the game, the rules are very simple - to score, the pups just need to get the ball to one of the endzones.
The idea behind Puppy Bowl is to get the message across that a pet is for life and to raise awareness of the work that Planet Animal do, with the aim of attracting volunteers to help out at the shelters, take the dogs for a daily walk or even foster a puppy. Volunteers usually commit for around eight hours a month for a minimum of six months. More information is available from their website or your local shelter. How do I adopt a Puppy Bowl pup or kitten?
Anyone wanting to adopt a pup or kitten that has taken part in Puppy Bowl can do so by visiting Animal Planet’s website www.animalPlanet.com or Discovery.com, where they will be directed to their nearest shelter where they can find out more information about the process. There are obviously certain conditions - for instance, being over 18 years of age. Both productions - Puppy Bowl and the Kitty Halftime Show are filmed and edited months in advance so many of the animals have already found a new home before Super Bowl Sunday. It is a very successful initiative - Animal Plant proudly claim that every puppy and kitten that has taken part in Puppy Bowl since the first edition in 2005 has been adopted.
Puppy Bowl 2023 will be aired on Planet Animal’s Youtube channel, Discovery+, Discovery, TBS, and HBO Max at 2 p.m. ET on Sunday 12 February.
