According to a recent survey, almost half of fans who have attended an NFL game during the past year have witnessed a violent incident. There is no doubt that crime and violence is on the rise at football games - usually fans fighting or threatening each other, and alcohol is often the common denominator.

Violence at NFL games

There have been numerous alcohol-related incidents in recent months and not jut in the stands or stadium surroundings. In November 2022, the Titans offensive coordinator Todd Downing was arrested for speeding and being over the legal alcohol limit while driving home after the team’s win over the Packers.

It prompted NFL commissioner Roger Goodell to send a memo to all 32 NFL teams, underlining the league’s policy regarding alcohol: “Clubs are reminded that League policy prohibits alcoholic beverages, including beer, in the locker rooms, practice or office facilities, or while traveling on team buses or planes at any time during the preseason, regular season, or postseason. This applies to all players, coaches, club personnel, and guests traveling with your team. Violations of this important policy will be taken seriously and will result in significant discipline”.

Fights have broken out in the stands during games - some of them escalating into mass brawls. In September, three men were arrested for misdemeanor assault after things turned ugly during the game between the Cardinals and Commanders at State Farm stadium.

NFL stadiums in crime hotspots

While we are seeing a rise in violence, most stadiums provide a safe environment for families to enjoy the game. But how does the public feel? Sportsbook Review conducted a survey to find out. Related crime data was compiled from NeighborhoodScout.

A total of 3,200 American football fans (71%male, 28% female women, 1% other) across all 32 teams took part in the survey and were asked three questions: Which NFL Stadium is the Most Dangerous? Which Stadiums Are Worst for Women, Children, and Visitors? and to rate their firsthand experiences of crime during NFL games.

According to NeighborhoodScout’s figures, the Minnesota Vikings’ home US Bank Stadium in downtown Minneapolis has the highest crime rate with 1,251.3 crimes per 10,000 residents.

  2. Empower Field at Mile High (Denver Broncos)
  3. NRG stadium (Houston Texans)

  5. Lumen Field (Seattle Seahawks)

But as for violent crime, Empower Field in Denver, the home of the Broncos, has reported 203.7 violent incidents per 10,000 residents in its vicinity - more than any other NFL venue.

As for witnessing an act of violence or worse still, being the victim of one, Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia has the worst reputation of all with 63.2% of respondents having witnessed a crime.
