Update:

There are still a couple weeks left in the NFL’s season as we await kickoff to Super Bowl LX from Santa Clara, California. That may be the case, but as the Seattle Seahawks and the New England Patriots prepare for the biggest game of the year, the other 30 teams around the league have already thinking about next season.

Brady takes charge in Buffalo

No teams will be more desperate to close the book on this season and start planning for the future than those who fired their coaches after the season. There were 10 coaches that were either let go or stepped down at the end of the season, leaving 10 teams needing to hit the coaching market hard.

The Buffalo Bills let Sean McDermott go after they failed to fulfill their Super Bowl expectations once again this season. They went crashing out of the Divisional Round with their loss to the Denver Broncos, and McDermott was let go just days after. Now Joe Brady is the latest coach to fill one of those head coaching positions after being promoted from offensive coordinator to top dog on the sideline.

Coaching positions filled:

  • Tennesse Titans: Robert Saleh
  • New York Giants: John Harbaugh
  • Miami Dolphins: Jeff Hafley
  • Baltimore Ravens: Jesse Minter
  • Atlanta Falcons: Kevin Stefanski
  • Pittsburgh Steelers: Mike McCarthy
  • Buffalo Bills: Joe Brady
  • Las Vegas Raiders: VACANT
  • Arizona Cardinals: VACANT
  • Cleveland Browns: VACANT

That leaves three teams still on the searching block. The Las Vegas Raiders, the Arizona Cardinals and the Cleveland Browns are the last three franchises still looking to fill the vacancy on the sidelines. The Cleveland Browns finished the season with a record of 5-12, which was the best of the three teams still to name a coach.

The three final slots

Kevin Stefanski had a rough year in his final season with the Browns. The former NFL Coach of the Year had a mess at the quarterback position, with a packed QB room that saw three different starters under center including two rookies, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. Stefanski was let go, and who ever takes the job will inherit a bit of a mess at the QB position, along with plenty of other problems across the board.

The Arizona Cardinals decided to move on from Johnathan Gannon after three years in the desert. The Cardinals won two of their first three games but then lost 14 of 15 and like in Cleveland, the coach who takes the job in Arizona could have a messy quarterback situation to deal with. Kyler Murray has been the started in Arizona when healthy, but has done anything from secure himself the job in the future despite his being due $36.8 million next season. There are weapons at WR, TE and even RB, but who ever the new coach is, is going to need to sort things out under center.

The Las Vegas Raiders are the final team looking for a coach, and if candidates are a bit skeptical to go to Sin City, you wouldn’t blame them. Since the 2020 season, the Raiders have had five coaches, the latest of which was Pete Carroll who was let go after one season. No coach since then has got more than 26 games to prove themselves, and no coach has had time to implement their plan or change the culture of the franchise. The offense is in shambles with no real stars. They took a chance on Geno Smith and that didn’t work out. Ashton Jeanty could be good, but he needs an offense around him to shine. The only star on the defense was shut down for the final two games of the regular season and almost revolted against the franchise. The good news: they have the No. 1 pick in the Draft.
