What has Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Brandin Cooks said in defense of quarterback Dak Prescott?
With just days left before the Cowboys open their 2024 campaign, the team’s starting QB continues to come under fire. One of his teammates has had enough.
There are many questions surrounding the Cowboys’ signal caller and much of them are centered on whether or not he has what it takes to lead ‘The Boys’ back to glory, something they have not experienced in quite some time. Now, whether those doubts are justified remains up for debate but to hear one his teammates tell it, there’s no question he’s the right man for the job.
Brandin Cooks backs Dak Prescott fiercely
When you consider the fact that Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Brandin Cooks has played with some of the NFL’s best quarterbacks across several teams in his career, it’s hard not to listen carefully to what he has to say about the position. After all, this is a player who played with Drew Brees during his time with the New Orleans Saints as well as Jared Goff with the Los Angeles Rams, and of course the legendary Tom Brady during a stint with the New England Patriots. This is all to say, Cooks knows what he’s talking about and to that end, he made it crystal clear that his present quarterback, Dak Prescott, is a player who he trusts completely.
Speaking with the media this week, Cooks gave a strong defense of Prescott who has come in for intense backlash in recent months. “It’s blasphemy. It’s unbelievable,” Cooks said of criticism leveled toward Prescott. “The guy shows up every year, year in and year out. Putting up numbers, leading his team. He can’t do it all by himself.” Again, as is with most things context is key which is to say that while Prescott is undoubtedly a talented playmaker, there have been a few moments where he has faltered and unfortunately, they’ve come in the postseason.
Consider for a moment that while Prescott has got three Pro Bowl nods and has even led the NFL in touchdown passes last season, he has only managed to notch two wins in the playoffs, something that Cooks acknowledged despite giving his teammate full backing. “Us players around (Dak) also got to step up. So when we hear that disrespect, I take that personally, and as his teammates, we should take that personally because, at the end of the day, somebody has got to be able to help him get over that hump so we can go win one,” Cooks said. That journey will begin on Sunday when the Cowboys take on the Cleveland Browns in their season opener.
