Football is a team sport. If you don’t believe it, just try running that off-tackle play without a tackle. You might as well just line those ambulances up to cart all of your running backs to the hospital.

But as much as we know that it is about all 22 players on the field, we still focus on the top spot. The quarterback is the on-field general of the offense and as such is firmly in the spotlight.

Super Bowl LVII pitted the Philadelphia Eagles against the Kansas City Chiefs, which was dubbed as a battle between Jalen Hurts and counterpart Patrick Mahomes, both of whom rose from backup spots to spearhead an incredible offense. But in terms of salaries, the two were leagues apart.

The Eagles rode Hurts throughout the 2022 season and saw their 2020 choice to backup Carson Wentz turn into one of the most eye-opening quarterbacks in the league.

And while the Chiefs were paying Mahomes $450 million, at the time the highest-value contract in the league, for the privilege of his services, the Eagles were getting an absolute steal.

What was Jalen Hurts previous contract value?

A lot of the chasm between what Hurts was paid and what Mahomes was paid was down to longevity and experience. Mahomes has now won the Super Bowl twice and made three trips there in only five years as a starter. In short, he has proven his value.

Poised to become a superstar in his own right, Jalen Hurts lit up the Eagles offense last year, at times accounting for their entire attacking capacity. However, it was only his third year in the league and, most importantly, his first as a starter.

Back in 2020, Philadelphia was all-in on Carson Wentz when they chose Hurts in the second round of the draft as a potential backup. They had only recently dumped Nick Foles for Wentz, offered him a top-of-the-market contract and made the decision to grab Hurts as a cheap backup. Emphasis on cheap.

Somehow, Wentz fell apart. The Eagles ate $34 million to get rid of him and Jalen Hurts stepped into the breach.

Hurts has since become everything that an NFL quarterback should be, and then some. But he remained on the bottom end of the pay scale, which the Eagles knew they would have to address sooner rather than later.

The initial rookie contract that Hurts signed was worth $6,025,171 over four years. That equated to a base salary of $1,082,744, with a signing bonus of $485,486, making him an annual cash flow of $1,157,744. Hurts also got a workout bonus of $75,000 for the three seasons he played, giving him a total net worth of $6 million, perhaps the most undervalued player in the NFL.

Jalen Hurts’ signs record NFL deal in 2023

In April 2023, two months after losing in the Super Bowl, his fortunes literally changed. The Eagles announced they had reached an agreement with Hurts on a new deal worth a whopping $255 million over five years - $51 million per season. As a result, the 25-year-old went from being the 35th highest paid quarterback in the NFL to the best paid player in the league’s history, ahead of Mahomes, who has a 10-year $450 million deal.

Almost $180 million is guaranteed and Hurts becomes the first ever Eagles player to have a no-trade clause written into his contract. According to Celebrity Net Worth, the Texan’s overall net worth has jumped up to $30 million, a figure which - like his star - is sure to continue rising.
