What is the CFL Negotiation List and why is Shedeur Sanders on it?

The Cleveland Browns selected Shedeur Sanders with the 144th pick of the NFL Draft, and now needs to make the team, if not the CFL could come calling.

Update:

There weren’t a whole lot of teams lining up for Sheduer Sanders. In fact there each team had their shot at him four times, but no one seemed to want on of the best rated quarterbacks in the NFL Draft. That doesn’t seem to be the case in the Canadian Football League.

Shedeur’s fall from grace

It was a nightmare draft for the most accurate passer of last year’s college football season. Some experts went into the draft saying he had a chance to go to the Tennessee Titans with the first pick. The Titans passed on him. So did the New York Giants with the third pick and the Cleveland Browns with the fifth pick. He didn’t get picked on the first day, or the second.

The QB who seemed to be one of the top two or at least top three QBs in the class went to the Cleveland Browns on the third day, in the fifth round with the 144th pick. Now he is preparing to start training camp not hoping to be named the starter by Week 1, he is just hoping to be on the roster.

The Browns have a long list of QBs fighting for a roster spot, and Sanders is hoping to be one of those. If he doesn’t end up making the final 53 man roster, it seems like a fall back plan. It’s probably not the one the son of Dallas Cowboys great Deion Sanders was hoping for.

CFL waiting if Shedeur gets cut

In the event that the former Colorado Buffalo gunslinger is without a team at the end of preseason, he could be going north of the border. Shedeur has been put on the CFL Negotiation List. According to the Canadian Football League’s website, that is a list “of up to 45 players who are currently either unsigned or are playing in the NFL, in another professional league, or in college. Teams hold exclusive CFL negotiating rights with players on their lists, and those players can be added, traded or removed at any time.”

Sanders has one objective and that’s making the Browns roster. Who knows if he’d even be interested in the opportunity to go to the CFL, but in the meantime he has to focus on beating out the four quarterbacks on the depth chart in Cleveland. Deshaun Watson is injured but he’ll have spot. Joe Flacco is 40 but he has a decent chance of making it. So do Kenny Pickett and Dillion Gabriel, so it’s not going to be easy.

The Cleveland Browns have a long history of quarterbacks who never lived up to the bill. The most famous of all of those underwhelming QBs was Tim Brown who was taken with the No. 1 pick in the 1999 Draft. That didn’t work well. Baker Mayfield was also a No. 1 pick and he got run out of town, however unfairly that was to the current Tampa Bay QB1. Watson has had a long list of off the field and on the field troubles that have kept him sidelined more than under center. Shedeur could be the guy to turn things around but he’s got an uphill climb.
