Super Bowl 2024 has now concluded and while Kansas City Chiefs’ celebrations will continue for some time, considerations are already being made for the huge event that will be capturing the nation’s attention just under a year from now. We say thank you and farewell to our most recent hosts Las Vegas and look forward to the unmistakable hospitality of New Orleans, which is gearing up to welcome us in for Super Bowl 2025, which also goes by another name.

New Orleans for 2025 Super Bowl LIX

The game is scheduled to take place on Sunday 9 February 2025 at the Caesars Superdome, home to the New Orleans Saints and it will be the 59th edition of the finale to the NFL season, which started way back in 1967. That number 59 is broken down as 50 (L) plus 9 (IX or ‘10 less 1′) and therefore written wholly as LIX.

New Orleans has hosted the Super Bowl on seven previous occasions, with next year’s event tying the record of eight with Miami. Known for its colorful music, distinctive cuisine, and exuberant Mardi Gras celebrations, there’s a reason we keep going back.

The Baltimore Ravens beat the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII in 2013, the last time it was held in New Orleans and there are a number of teams that will be vying to knock the Chiefs off their lofty perch as the new season unfolds.

Super Bowl naming tradition

Initially, distinguishing the Super Bowl from the regular season was evident. While the season spans autumn and winter within a single calendar year, the playoffs and Super Bowl spill into January and sometimes February of the subsequent year. Hence, Tom Brady’s final Super Bowl victory in 2021 marked the culmination of the 2020 season.

In June 1966, as the NFL and AFL merged for the 1970 season, they established an interim agreement. Both leagues would send their champions to clash in a decisive showdown at the season’s end. To streamline communication, they labeled this new event with a number. Given its resemblance to college bowl games, Lamar Hunt casually dubbed it the “Super Bowl,” a name that stuck.

When the merger was finalized four years later, the Super Bowl had become a fixture in football fans’ minds. It was officially adopted, along with Roman numerals, starting with Super Bowl V. Previous NFL-AFL Championship Games were retrospectively named Super Bowls I-IV, solidifying the iconic branding.

Why Roman numerals for Super Bowl editions?

Lamar Hunt believed that incorporating Roman numerals would elevate the Super Bowl’s significance and grandeur, a belief validated by time. No other yearly sporting occasion rivals its level of spectacle and excitement. While Super Bowls have consistently used Roman numerals since V, the 50th edition broke tradition with a numerical logo after the NFL tested 73 alternatives. However, the following year returned to the Roman numeral format with Super Bowl LI, and now we can look ahead to Super Bowl LIX, which will then be followed by simply LX, for 60, assuming no change in policy.
