The Washington Commanders ended a nearly two-decade-long wait for a playoff win on Sunday, as Zane Gonzalez’s late field goal earned Dan Quinn’s men a dramatic Wild Card victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

At the end of the fourth quarter at the Buccaneers’ Raymond James Stadium, Gonzalez hit a field goal off the right-hand upright to seal a 23-20 win for the Commanders, who are seeded at No. 6 in the NFC after a 12-5 regular season.

“It’s been truly wild”

I’m just a small part of a big plan, so I’m just trying to do my part where I can,” Gonzalez told reporters as he and the Commanders celebrated post-game, per NBC Sports. “Credit to all the guys - offense, defense - for everything they’ve done today and throughout the season.

“It’s been truly wild and honestly it’s just fun to be a part of the ride.”

Running back Austin Ekeler added: “This is what we do. We’ve been in a lot of these moments […] and we’ve proven over and over again [this season] that, hey, when it’s time to go, we lock in and we get the job done.”

When was the Commanders’ last playoff win?

The Commanders’ triumph in Tampa halted the franchise’s 19-year winless streak in the NFL postseason. Washington’s previous victory in a playoff game was back on January 7, 2006, and also came against the Buccaneers.

Then known as the Redskins, the men from the US capital beat Tampa Bay 17-10 in the 2005-06 Wild Card round, before losing to the Seattle Seahawks in the Divisional playoffs.

Since then, the Commanders have only reached the postseason on five occasions, exiting at the Wild Card stage in 2007, 2012, 2015 and 2020.

Who do the Commanders face next in the playoffs?

Following their Wild Card win in Florida, Washington now face a Divisional round matchup with the NFC’s No. 1 seed, the Detroit Lions. The bookmakers' favorites to win Super Bowl LIX in New Orleans on February 9, the Lions qualified automatically for the Divisional playoffs as the conference’s top-ranked team.

The Commanders visit the Lions at Ford Field on Saturday January 18, with kick-off in Michigan scheduled for at 8:00 p.m. ET/5:00 p.m. PT.
