The multi-award-winning musician Jon Batiste, a Louisiana native, will sing the U.S. national anthem ahead of today’s Super Bowl in New Orleans, where the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles are to face off for the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Who is Jon Batiste?

Batiste, 38, is from the New Orleans area, having been born in Metairie and grown up in Kenner.

A singer, multi-instrumentalist and composer, Batiste has seven Grammy Awards to his name, including Album of the Year for his 2021 record We Are.

His most recent Grammy wins came last week, when he claimed two accolades - Best Music Film and Best Song Written for Visual Media - for his role in the documentary American Symphony. Directed by Matthew Heineman, the 2023 film followed a year in Batiste’s life, covering his wife Suleika Jaouad’s battle with leukemia.

Batiste has also earned Oscars recognition, winning Best Original Score after co-writing the soundtrack to the 2020 Pixar movie Soul. What’s more, he picked up an Emmy for his involvement in “NOLA Vibes”, a spot for the 2022 NCAA March Madness final four, which was held in New Orleans.

Having won an Emmy, a Grammy and an Oscar, Batiste now only needs a Tony to complete a clean sweep of the four major awards in television, music, film and Broadway theater, respectively.

So far, only 21 people in the entertainment industry have made it into the ‘EGOT’ club.

Batiste out to honor late grandfather at Super Bowl

Batiste, who has previously sung the national anthem at the NBA All-Star Game and tennis’s U.S. Open, has said his late grandfather, David Gauthier, will be in his thoughts when he performs at Caesars Superdome tonight.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight this week, Batiste spoke of his desire to commemorate the national contribution of Americans such as Gauthier, a Navy veteran who played a role in overcoming racial segregation in the U.S.

Batiste added that he would also be performing for a nation which, he lamented, is currently in need of “healing”.

“I’m thinking a lot about my personal story and the story of this country, and how we can honor the best of us," Batiste told Entertainment Tonight. “My grandfather, in my life, he was one of my great mentors […].

He was the best of this country. He served this country, he was the first wave of integrating in the Navy, he was the first wave of many of our greatest achievements. He was a part of a lot of things.

So just having that legacy in my family and veterans in my family, people who served this country, people who understand what it means to have freedoms and to almost lose them...

“I’m singing for them and I’m singing for us and all of our collective love and healing that we need right now.”
