Tommy DeVito is set to become the first rookie free agent to start a regular-season game for the Giants in the common draft era, when he takes the helm as starting quarterback in the Sunday matchup against the Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium.

Who is Giants’ Tommy DeVito?

DeVito, the Giants’ emerging QB, made his NFL debut against the Jets just over a week ago, stepping in for Tyrod Taylor after a rib cage injury. DeVito, having also appearing when Daniel Jones suffered a right anterior cruciate ligament tear, has showcased his skills by completing 17 of 27 passes for 174 yards, including a nine-yard touchdown pass to Wan’Dale Robinson. He has also displayed his mobility with 29 rushing yards, including a six-yard touchdown. He did however see two interceptions. After the 40-0 loss at the MetLife Stadium in week one, there is some serious motivation to deliver some payback.

As a noteworthy statistic, according to the Elias Sports Bureau, DeVito will be among the select group of nine undrafted rookie quarterbacks who have started an NFL game since 2010. The combined career record of these quarterbacks stands at 7-20, but in their starting debuts, they boast a winning record of 5-4.

Barkley acts as QB backup for Devito

Matt Barkley, serving as the backup quarterback, brings experience to the Giants, having entered the NFL a decade ago. Barkley’s career includes stints with multiple teams, with his most active season being in 2016 when he started six of the seven games he played for the Bears. His career totals feature 212 completions on 363 attempts for 2,699 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 22 interceptions.

DeVito’s upcoming start against the Cowboys will mark his place as the 31st different quarterback to start for the Giants in the Super Bowl era, following Tyrod Taylor’s recent starting debut this season.
