OLYMPIC GAMES

Over 100 corroded Paris 2024 Olympic medals returned

More than 100 unhappy athletes have returned their defective medals to the Monnaie de Paris, who produced them.

Over 100 corroded Paris 2024 Olympic medals returned

During the past four months, the Monnaie de Paris (Paris Mint) has received dozens of Olympic medals in various stages of decay which need to be replaced. A manufacturing error in the varnish used to coat the medals caused many medals, especially the bronze ones, to corrode and the recipients, sportsmen and women who took part in the Paris 2024 Games, have made official complaints.

The issue concerning the quality of the medals made headlines last month ago after French swimmers Clément Secchi and Yohann Ndoye Brouard published photos of their decaying medals on social media. Secchi displayed his rusty medal in an Instagram post, captioned “Crocodile skin”. Brouard responded, quipping that his medal looked like it was from the Paris 1924 Games over a century ago.

The Monnaie de Paris has reportedly sacked three production and quality directors who were responsible the scandal, although those dismissals cannot be confirmed. What we do know is that dozens of Olympic champions are disappointed for having received a prize that does not reflect their great achievements.

Chromium trioxide, part of the problem

It has since emerged that a seemingly innocuous compound, chromium trioxide, is at the root of the the problem.

Chromium trioxide is mainly used in the coating process of metal surfaces to improve their corrosion resistance and appearance. It acts as an oxidizing agent in various chemical reactions. It is also used in the manufacture of artificial gemstones. But it is also a highly toxic, corrosive and carcinogenic compound. It must be handled with extreme care, using appropriate protective equipment.

As for alternative varnishes, one of the popular option is the epoxy coating, which offers excellent protection against corrosion and is less toxic. Other alternative coatings include a silicone sealant, which provides a durable and flexible barrier against moisture and oxidation, or a water-based nail lacquer, which is a less conventional but effective option for small surfaces, such as nail polish. medals. These alternatives are safer for the environment and human health, and also maintain the quality and durability of the medals.

Among the disgruntled athletes who have returned their medals is British diver Yasmin Harper. “There’s been some small bits of tarnishing,” she explained. “I think it’s water or anything that gets under metal; it’s making it go a little bit discolored, but I’m not sure”.

The medals for Paris 2024 were designed by French luxury jewellers Chaumet and were set with a piece of iron salvaged from the Eiffel Tower during renovation work on the landmark.
