Canelo calls for fight against former world champion in what would be the most legendary fight in history
Canelo Álvarez looks to unify the super middleweight division once again as he prepares for a historic clash following his bout against William Scull.

Saúl ‘Canelo’ Álvarez has been one of the finest fighters on the planet over the last decade. The Mexican is renowned for his achievements across multiple weight divisions. The Guadalajara native has a professional record of 62 wins, 39 by knockout, with just two losses and two draws.
He’s competed at welterweight, light middleweight, middleweight, super middleweight, and light heavyweight, securing world titles in four of them, and becoming the first undisputed super-middleweight champion of the ‘four belt era’.
His next fight is just days away, on May 3, where he faces IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in a bout that will unify the super middleweight division titles. Canelo is aiming to reclaim the IBF title, which he vacated in 2024, and become the undisputed super middleweight champion.
If Canelo overcomes Scull, a significant underdog, that would set the scene for his highly anticipated bout against Terence Crawford in September 2025, as part of the four-fight deal Canelo signed with the Saudi boxing authorities.
Who would Canelo love to fight?
But in addition to his upcoming fights, there’s one man Canelo would love to face… the first boxer who stopped him. None other than Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather. (The other fighter? Dmitry Bivol via unanimous decision in May 2022, when canelo challenged for the WBA super light heavyweight title).
Back in 2013, Canelo lost his first professional fight, by a majority decision, against Mayweather, and he admits that still bugs him, as he admitted to DAZN Boxing.
“Yes, of course [I would like to fight Mayweather again]. I would love the opportunity to get revenge. Obviously we know it’s not going to happen but yes, I would love to get rid of that little thorn.”
The loss happened back in September 2013, with Canelo Álvarez facing Floyd Mayweather Jr. at a 152-pound catchweight in a bout to unify their light middleweight titles.
Despite entering as the WBC and WBA (Regular) champion, Álvarez was outclassed by Mayweather, who won by majority decision in front of a sold-out MGM Grand crowd. Mayweather landed nearly twice as many punches and earned a guaranteed $41.5 million, compared to Canelo’s $5 million.
Why is Canelo vs Mayweather unlikely to happen?
Despite Canelo’s wish to face Mayweather, the fact is ’Money’ is now 48, and hasn’t fought professionally since stopping MMA legend Conor McGregor in the tenth round of their crossover bout back in 2017.
Since then he’s take part in a number of exhibition contests, including against YouTuber Logan Paul, but a pro fight against Canelo is a different proposition.
