BRUCE BENNETTAFP

Named after Lord Stanley of Preston, the Governor General of Canada, this iconic championship trophy has a rich history that dates back to the late 19th century. The story begins in 1892 when Lord Stanley, an avid hockey enthusiast, decided to donate a trophy to Canada’s top-ranking amateur ice hockey club.

The trophy was initially known as the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. Lord Stanley’s entire family supported the sport, with sons and daughters actively playing and promoting the game. Little did they know that their gesture would lead to the creation of a legendary prize that transcends time and borders.

But how many times has the Dallas Stars and the Golden Knights have the Stanley Cup?

Dallas Stars

The Dallas Stars have won the Stanley Cup once in their franchise history. Their championship victory came during the 1998-99 season when they defeated the Buffalo Sabres in a thrilling six-game series.

The Stars’ record in the Stanley Cup Finals is 1-4, with their last appearance in the finals occurring during the 2019-20 season, where they lost to the Tampa Bay Lightning in six games.

Overall, the Stars have made it to the Stanley Cup Finals five times (1981, 1991, 1999, 2000, and 2020) since their inception as the Minnesota North Stars before relocating to Dallas in 1993.

Vegas Golden Knights

The Vegas Golden Knights, despite being one of the youngest NHL franchises, have already made a significant impact. They won their first Stanley Cup in the 2022-23 season by defeating the Florida Panthers in five games.

Prior to this victory, the Golden Knights had reached the Stanley Cup Finals during their inaugural season in 2018, where they fell to the Washington Capitals in five games.

The Dallas Stars have one Stanley Cup title, while the Vegas Golden Knights have secured their first championship recently. Both teams have left their mark in NHL history. Lord Stanley’s legacy lives on, and the Cup continues to inspire generations of players, coaches, and fans alike.
