The Match is a unique golf event designed to provide an enjoyable and captivating experience for both passionate golf fans and casual observers. Unlike conventional golf tournaments that involve numerous players competing over several days, The Match usually features a head-to-head or team-based format played over 18 or more holes. The participants are typically top-notch professional golfers or renowned celebrities from the sports and entertainment industries.

The ninth edition of Capital One’s The Match takes place on Monday night. This year, two LPGA players will represent the association for the first time in the event’s history. However, it won’t be a battle of the genders. Instead, it will be a mixed competition where the women will play alongside the men in an individual skins event to decide the winner.

The LPGA will be represented by the superstars Lexi Thompson and Rose Zhang. At the same time, Rory McIlroy will return to the PGA Tour, after usually playing at the beginning of the season on the DP World Tour (European Tour), to participate in the event, joining Max Homa. Thompson and McIlroy will be the first pair, while Zhang and Homa will form the other.

When does Capital One’s ‘The Match’ start?

This year’s edition will be held on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Park Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida, teeing off at 6:30 p.m. ET/3:30 p.m. PT.

Capital One’s ‘The Match’: preview

Ernie Johnson, a six-time Emmy Award winner, will host his fourth Capital One’s The Match event, accompanied by Charles Barkley, a Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famer. Trevor Immelman will join as an analyst for the seventh time, while Kathryn Tappen will return as a course reporter for the third time. Christina Kim will make her series debut.

Among the four players, McIlroy is the only one who has played in The Match before. However, his previous experience wasn’t successful, as he lost 3&2 to Thomas and Spieth while playing alongside Woods. While he’s still expected to be the favorite this time around, he’ll need to work hard to win the belt. On the other hand, Homa, who recently participated in a similar competition called the Netflix Cup, is expected to arrive in Florida straight after the California swing on the PGA Tour. This could give him an edge over the other players as he will be more familiar with the conditions.

Meanwhile, the women players are also expected to display exceptional skills in this event. Zhang, only 20 years old, has already impacted the golf world. She turned pro in May last year and won her LPGA debut at the Mizuho Americas Open. Before that, she won the NCAA Division I individual title for the second consecutive year while playing for Stanford. Her incredible form and talent will likely make her one of the show’s stars. Thompson has had experience playing alongside men before. She made history in the fall by participating in the Shriners Children’s Open on the PGA Tour, narrowly missing the cut. In that event, the 11-time LPGA winner and major champion demonstrated that her game is up to par with her male counterparts.
