Update:

Being in the spotlight can be tough and it’s something that Carlos Alcaraz has already experienced first-hand at the age of 22.

The Spanish tennis player was overwhelmed by Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final last weekend and he was seen admitting that he was struggling to contend with the Italian’s power. During one of the breaks in the third set, Alcaraz was heard asking his team: “How is it possible that he’s so much better than me in the backfield?”

It was a striking admission from the young Spaniard and it has sparked plenty of comments in the days that followed. One of the most relevant came from tennis legend Jimmy Connors, the player with the most titles in history (109).

The American, via his podcast ‘Advantage Connors’, expressed his surprise at seeing Alcaraz appear so vulnerable in the middle of the final: “That is a tough thing to admit.”

“I don’t know if I would ever have admitted that. No matter what, you have to get in there, mix up your game a bit, or try and do something a bit different.”

“I know I say that a lot, but if your game number one is not winning, you have to figure something else out. I got my a** handed to me a couple of times at Wimbledon too. Everybody does.

“But if you are going to beat me, you are going to have to beat me. I am trying to play three different games, so if you are beating me at game one or game two, I am trying to do something different.

Connors continued: “You may not see it from the stands, but that is a tough thing to admit.”

But despite all of his success, Alcaraz is still a young player who was coming up against Sinner at the peak of his game. The Spaniard still has plenty of time to broaden his capabilities and figure out a way to contend with Sinner when he’s in this sort of incredibly form.
