Khamzat Chimaev weighs in on long-awaited Topuria vs Tsarukyan clash

Khamzat Chimaev, who captured the UFC middleweight belt by defeating Dricus du Plessis via unanimous decision, was asked about one of the most anticipated lightweight matchups: Ilia Topuria vs Arman Tsarukyan.

Having trained alongside both fighters – and with Tsarukyan even in his corner at UFC 319 – the Chechen champion said he is convinced the two are the top lightweights and that their clash is only a matter of time.

What Chimaev wants for Topuria vs Tsarukyan

Tsarukyan, currently ranked No 2 in the 155-pound division, has repeatedly mocked the Spanish-Georgian fighter in videos, claiming “El Matador” is running from him. Still, Chimaev, who knows them both well, says the fight should happen. “I hope they fight, it’s a good match for both. We need to know who is the best fighter in the world, so I’ll be happy to watch. Arman has good movement, good kicks, good wrestling, and Ilia has strong jiu-jitsu and striking,” he said on JaxxonPodcast.

For now, it seems no news will come before October – when the UFC has two cards scheduled – regarding Topuria’s next bout. He is expected to return to the Octagon in December. Chimaev, however, looks set to defend his crown sooner, with UFC 321 on October 26 at Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi already in his sights.

“Thank God I’m ready and injury-free,” he declared at the UFC 319 post-fight press conference.
