Novak Djokovic made history on Saturday with his win at the Geneva Open. The Serbian’s victory over Hubert Hurkacz was his 100th singles tournament win, becoming just the third male player to reach that milestone.

Coming two days after his 38th birthday, Djokovic had lost the last two finals that he has reached since winning the Paris Olympics at Roland Garros. He had waited nine months to reach triple-digits but was relieved to have reached that mark.

I’m just grateful to clinch the 100 here,” Djokovic said after the win. “I had to work for it, that is for sure.”

“Hubert was probably closer to the victory the entire match than I was,” he continued. “I don’t know how I broke his serve.”

He joins Roger Federer (103 titles) and Jimmy Connors (109) in the short list of male players with 100 tournament wins in the Open era. Djokovic already holds the record for the most Grand Slam titles with 24 triumphs, ahead of Rafael Nadal (22) and Federer (20). He can extend his lead when he heads to the French Open next week.

The hundredth title now secured, Djokovic made history for other reasons on Saturday. This latest triumph came nearly 19 years after his first in July 2006. That means that he has now won a title in 20 different seasons, becoming the first man in the Open era to do so.

Speaking after the final, runner-up Hurkacz paid tribute to Djokovic and his career. Above all else, he singled out the Serbian’s humility.

“It’s really inspiring how you present yourself on the court, off the court. It’s just really incredible what you have achieved,” Hurkacz said.
