It was a serious incident that could have derailed the new father’s PGA Championship push, but the “misunderstanding” got the memesters creative.

As the sporting world looked ahead to Day 2 of the PGA Championship at Valhalla Golf Club on Friday morning – following a record-breaking opening round – news broke that world number one Scottie Scheffler had been detained by police. Video footage showed the new dad being led away in handcuffs and charges were to follow.

Describing the whole incident as a “big misunderstanding amid a chaotic situation,” the 27-year old admitted that he had completed his pre-round stretching routine in the jail cell before returning to the course where he posted an impressive five-under score of 66. The day ended with him tied for fourth and still very much in the hunt for yet more success.

Meanwhile, the arrest was never going to be overlooked by the meme creators out there and so here is a selection of those that were going viral across social media.

Worker killed on Friday morning at Valhalla

Although there was some light-hearted fun had at Scheffler’s expense, it’s worth us remembering that there was an extremely serious incident that led up to it.

Play on Day 2 had been delayed by an hour and 20 minutes after a worker at the PGA Championship was fatally hit by a shuttle bus on a busy road leading to the entrance of the Valhalla Golf Club. The victim, named as Louisville resident John Mills, was pronounced dead at the scene.

PGA Championship Day 3

Play was suspended on Friday evening due to darkness at 8:41 p.m. with 18 members of the 156-man field yet to complete their round. The organisers revealed that they would resume at 7:15 a.m. ET today, adding that round-three tee times would be scheduled between 9 a.m. and approximately 3 p.m. ET.
