The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) employs a ranking system known as the ATP rankings to determine player entry and seeding for various tournaments. This system is the most reliable and accurate way to assess a player’s performance and ranking within the professional tennis community. It is a crucial tool used by the ATP to ensure that the best and most deserving players can compete at the highest levels of the sport.

Novak Djokovic had already secured his position as the No. 1 player in the ATP Rankings for the next five weeks before the US Open final on Sunday. It seems unlikely that Carlos Alcaraz will be able to catch up to the Serbian during the remaining months of the season.

Djokovic won the Flushing Meadows tournament last night, which means he will again claim the top spot in the rankings after the Grand Slam, replacing last year’s US Open champion, Alcaraz.

Starting Monday, September 11, the 24-time Grand Slam winner will begin his ninth stint as the No. 1 player, increasing his record of most weeks spent at the top of the men’s and women’s rankings to 389 weeks.

Given Djokovic’s recent form, it wouldn’t be surprising if he remains at the top of the rankings for the rest of the year. However, there’s still much to play for in the coming months.

ATP Rankings

Alcaraz entered the Flushing Meadows hard-court major with 9,815 points. However, as the defending champion, he lost 2,000 points. Despite reaching the semi-finals, he only managed to gain 720 points, leaving him with 8,535 points.

On the other hand, Djokovic had not played in New York last year and, therefore, had no points to defend. He began the tournament with 9,575 points, and by reaching the final, he gained 1,200 points. After defeating Daniil Medvedev in the final, he added another 800 points to his tally, bringing his total to 11,795 points.

As Alcaraz lost in the semi-final, Djokovic already had a 2,460-point lead over the Spaniard. This lead increased to 3,260 points after Djokovic became the champion on Sunday evening.

Even though Djokovic has not confirmed his schedule, it is unlikely that he will play again until the Shanghai Masters. Therefore, he will drop 250 points from the Tel Aviv Open (postponed until November) and another 500 points for not defending his Astana Open title.
