The former undisputed lightweight champion wants to prove he’s one of the top boxers despite his last performances.

Thanks to his controversial personality and great boxing skills, Teofimo Lopez has become one of the most popular boxers.

He will now take on Josh Taylor in a fight where fireworks and intensity are expected, and The Takeover wants to prove to the boxing community he is still the Teofimo of old.

Lopez has been widely criticized lately due to his latest performances inside the ring, where his level was way above the one that made him the undisputed lightweight champion.

He’s the underdog in the Taylor fight on Saturday, held at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden. The main reason why he’s not the favorite to get his hand raised is because of his last appearance in the ring against Sandor Martin, a massive underdog who, according to many, deserved to win that fight.

Lopez’s top fights

Lopez’s fight against The Tartan Tornado is one of the toughest in his young career. The 25-year-old fighter must deal with the undefeated Taylor, known for his durability and relentless fighting style.

Teofimo’s first big fight as a professional was against Richard Commey. However, he defeated the Ghanaian fighter via TKO in the second round, winning the IBF lightweight title.

Lopez, who was seen as one of the brightest young stars since that victory, fought Vasiliy Lomachenko after that. Many thought the American would be outboxed, but he ended up pulling the upset via unanimous decision in his most important victory to date. He became the undisputed lightweight champion by defeating the Ukrainian.

Thirteen months later, Lopez defended all his belts against the undefeated Australian fighter George Kambosos Jr. He was expected to hand his opponent his first loss. Still, Kambosos Jr. unexpectedly beat Lopez after being awarded a split decision victory by the judges. As happened to Lomachenko before, Lopez lost all his belts to his rival. After that, El Brooklyn has never looked the same fighter, despite defeating Pedro Campa and Sándor Martín.
