Perspective and clarity are things that most people hope for in this life, but how many of them would be willing to trek into the depths of a South American jungle, for the purpose of ingesting a hallucinogenic substance to find it?

Jake Paul discusses doing Ayahuasca with Aaron Rodgers

Speaking in a recent interview, YouTube star and professional boxer, Jake Paul, opened up about a rather interesting experience that he had with star quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Indeed, Paul spoke openly about drinking Ayahuasca with Rodgers in the past, which incidentally is something that Rodgers has previously spoken about doing, explaining that it brought him mental clarity.

“Aaron and I were actually together when we did the Ayahuasca,” Paul said. “He’s more publicly known for speaking about it, but I was actually there with him when we did it. We spent the week there doing it. Definitely share that similarity in terms of spirituality and reflecting and going into the deepest parts of the mind. Definitely have been doing some of that.” Paul also went on to add that he’s interested in doing a darkness retreat. If you missed it, Rodgers recently embarked on one, only to return with the announcement that he intends to play for the New York Jets. In case you’re wondering, there has yet to be any official word that a trade has been completed. “It’s funny, I was planning on doing the darkness retreat later this year,” he said.

What is Ayahuasca?

According to healthline.com, “Ayahuasca — also known as the tea, the vine, and la purga — is a brew made from the leaves of the Psychotria viridis shrub along with the stalks of the Banisteriopsis caapi vine, though other plants and ingredients can be added as well.” To be clear, both active ingredients contain hallucinogenic properties, with Psychotria viridis containing N,N-dimethyltryptamine (DMT), which is a powerful hallucinogenic chemical that occurs naturally in the plant.

The drink was used historically for spiritual and religious purposes by ancient Amazonian tribes and is still used today during sacred religious ceremonies by some religious communities in Brazil and North America, including the Santo Daime. It should be noted, that a shaman or curandero - the individual who leads the ceremony - is responsible for preparing the brew by boiling the above mentioned ingredients in water. Once it has reached a satisfactory level, the shaman then separates the water from the plant material and proceeds to repeat this process until a highly concentrated liquid has been produced. Once it’s cool enough, it’s then strained to remove any remaining impurities and then in turn ingested.

What did Aaron Rodgers say in the past about Ayahuasca?

It was back in August of 2022 during an appearance on “The Aubrey Marcus Podcast,” when Rodgers revealed that he drank the psychedelic while on a retreat in Peru in 2020. Rodgers went on to explain that the experience with Ayahuasca made him a changed man before saying, “knew that I was never gonna be the same.”

“I think there’s so many myths and rumors about it,” Rodgers said. “The fear around it is, you’re going to s--t yourself, it’s just a big throw-up fest...but the negative framework of it is that is the experience, not the deep and meaningful and crazy mind-expanding possibilities, and also deep self-love and healing that can happen on the other side. ...I had a magical experience with the sensation of feeling a hundred different hands on my body imparting a blessing of love and forgiveness for myself and gratitude for this life from what seemed to be my ancestors.” It’s worth noting that Rodgers has spoken openly in the past about his belief that the experience helped him to play his two consecutive MVP seasons in 2020 and 2021 respectively.
