Which US athletes compete today, July 20, at the Oregon22 World Athletics Championships
Heading into Day 6 of the World Athletics Championships, Team USA continues to dominate the medal table with a total haul of 18, including six golds.
After five days of competition, Team USA has amassed a total of 18 medals to continue its domination of the first-ever World Athletics Championships to be held in the United States.
The men’s 400-meter hurdles gave the home team two podium finishes on Day 5, with Rai Benjamin bagging the silver with a time of 46.89 seconds and Trevor Bassitt the bronze with 47.39. Brazil’s Alison dos Santos won the race with a time of 46.29 seconds, which is a new record at the track and field competition. The win makes Dos Santos the first Brazilian athlete to win a gold at the World Championships.
Valerie Allman goes for gold at the women’s discus throw
There are only two medal events for Day 6- the women’s discus throw and the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase. Team USA’s Valarie Allman, the champion at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, has recorded throws in the high-60 meter range and a personal best of 71.46 meters, and is a strong candidate to bring home another gold. But Sandra Perkovic of Croatia could pose a threat, as she has had a run of powerful throws and defeated Allman this year.
The women’s 3000-meter steeplechase sees three Americans competing- Emma Coburn, Courtney Freichs, and Courtney Wayment. It’s considered a wide-open race, as only Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi and Norah Jeruto of Kazakhstan have recorded under-nine minute times this season.
Three men will be getting home crowd support at the men’s 800-meter race, which kicks off with first-round heats. Donavan Brazier, Bryce Hoppel, and Jonah Koech will be cheered on as the first three in each of the six heats and the next six fastest move on to the semifinals.
Sydney McLaughlin vs. Dalilah Muhammad at 400m hurdles semis
Four women from Team USA will be competing at the 400-meter hurdles in Day 6. Top contenders at the event have advanced to the semifinals, with world record-holder Sydney McLaughlin cruising through the first-round at 53.95 seconds.
Defending world champion Dalilah Muhammad powered through at 54.45 seconds at the heats after recovering from a hamstring injury that caused her withdrawal from the USATF Championships last month. Shamier Little placed second in the second heat with 54.77 seconds, while the fifth and final heat was led by Britton Wilson with a time of 54.54.
Three men from Team USA compete in 400m semifinals
Three Americans led by Michael Norman have qualified for the men’s 400 meters semifinals, with the Olympic gold medalist recording 45.37 seconds in the second heat. Champion Allison clinched the fourth heat after zooming down the track in the last stretch and ending with a time of 45.56, while Michael Cherry took the third heat with a first-place finish of 45.81. On the women’s side, Lynna Irby took third place in Heat 4 with a time of 51.78 to qualify for the 400-meter semifinals.
Elise Cranny, Emily Infield, and Karissa Schweizer will participate in the 5000-meter heats for women, while Ariana Ince, Maggie Malone, and Kara Winger will join the qualification rounds for the women’s javelin throw.
