Coco Gauff’s quest for a second Grand Slam remains alive after she defeated Great Britain’s Jodie Burrage to proceed to the third round of the 2025 Australian Open, where she will face 30th seed Leylah Fernandez.

Although the American wasn’t at her best, particularly in the second set, she did enough to see off the unseeded Burrage, winning 6-3, 7-5.

The 20-year-old hasn’t dropped a set in either of her opening two games in the tournament, her second-round victory following her 6-3, 6-3 triumph over compatriot Sofia Kenin in round one.

Tough 4th round match potentially awaits for Gauff

Gauff will now take on Canada’s Fernandez for a place in the fourth round, where the winner will play either Naomi Osaka, the former world No. 1, or Belinda Bencic, previously ranked fourth, both of whom are unseeded.

The match between Gauff and Fernandez has yet to be scheduled by tournament organisers but will almost certainly take place on Friday, January 17. Check back here a little later for an exact start time.

Who is Leylah Fernandez?

Fernandez is currently ranked 31st in the world rankings but was as high as 13th in August 2022. The 22-year-old has won three titles in her professional career, including back-to-back victories at the Monterrey Open in Mexico, and the 2023 Hong Kong Open (both WTA 250 events).

However, arguably the highlight of her career to date was her surprise run to the 2021 US Open final as a teenager. Fernandez defeated second seed Aryna Sabalenka, third seed Osaka and fifth seed Elina Svitolina on the way to losing in the showpiece match to Great Britain’s Emma Raducanu, a qualifier.

Coco Gauff vs Leylah Fernandez: head-to-head record

Gauff and Fernandez’s only previous meeting came less than three weeks ago in the group stage of the United Cup, which was won by the United States. The American won 6-3, 6-2, which she will hope is a good omen for Friday’s meeting.
