American tennis sensation Coco Gauff made history on Saturday, winning the US Open aged just 19.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Americans are by far the most successful nationality at the New York-hosted tournament. As one of tennis’ Grand Slam competitions it is the pinnacle of the sport and a huge achievement for any player.

Considering that Gauff is still a teenager, this is likely the first of many major titles in her career.

In the ‘Open era’ history of the US Open, two people have won the competition six times. Both are American females; Chris Evert and Serena Williams.

Who was the last American to win the US Open?

Sloan Stephens made history for the US back in 2017 when she beat Venus Williams 6-1, 0-6, 7-5 in the semi-finals before triumphing 6-3, 6-0 over then-15th seed Madison Keys in the final. This was her first Grand Slam singles title and she wrote her name into the record books.

She didn’t only win a US open, but she also became the first American woman other than Venus and Serena Williams to win a major since Jennifer Capriati in 2002.

Since Gauff’s triumph, Stephens remained the last American tennis player to win the US Open in both the women’s and men’s category. At the 2022 US Open, Stephens was defeated by the No. 1 Iga Swiatek, 6-3, 6-2, on Thursday.

Serena Williams came close in 2018 and 2019 but was beaten by Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu, respectively. Keys and Jennifer Brady also reached the semifinals in 2018 and 2020 respectively with incredible performances, but didn’t make it all the way through.

Last of the men: Andy Roddick

As for the men’s category, the last American to win the US Open was Andy Roddick back in 2003. He beat Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final to clinch his first and only Grand Slam victory.

Roddick managed to reach the final in 2006 both was beaten by Federer. That was the last time an American male reached the semi-finals of the US Open.

No other US men’s tennis player has won a Grand Slam since.
