América on brink of historic Liga MX record
Club América is just one result away from doing something not seen for nearly two decades, with crisis talks and plenty of doubts.

The game between América and Cruz Azul on Saturday, April 11, is not only one of the most anticipated of the Clausura 2026, but also a matchup that could mark a critical moment for Las Águilas, who arrive carrying a troubling run in this semester’s clásicos.
América face unusually bleak milestone
André Jardine’s team has already taken two major blows: it lost the Clásico Nacional to Chivas and the Clásico Capitalino to Pumas, both by 1-0 scorelines. Now it is 90 minutes away from facing Cruz Azul and trying to avoid a scenario that has not happened in more than a decade.
The last time América lost all three of its clásicos in the same tournament was in the Apertura 2011, under Alfredo Tena. In that campaign, it fell 1-0 to Pumas, 3-1 to Chivas and closed with a 3-1 defeat to Cruz Azul, capping off a semester to forget.

Since that Apertura 2011, roughly 30 short tournaments have passed, and in none of them had América again lost its three biggest regular-season games. That makes the current situation an unusual one for the blue-and-cream side.
A look further back into club history makes the record feel even more striking. The previous time América lost all three clásicos came in Invierno 1998, when it also fell to Cruz Azul, 3-1, Chivas, 1-0, and Pumas, 3-1, underscoring just how rare this kind of skid is.

Even in the Apertura 2014, under Antonio Mohamed, the team came close to repeating that negative chapter. But although it lost to Pumas and Cruz Azul, it managed to salvage a scoreless draw against Chivas, avoiding a third defeat.
The present picture for América in Clausura 2026 is far from encouraging. The team is going through an uneven stretch and arrives emotionally shaken while trying to regain ground in the overall standings and rediscover its best form.
On the other side, Cruz Azul enters as the tournament runner-up with 27 points, showing greater consistency. It also holds a nine-point edge over América, adding even more pressure on the azulcrema side.
