Martín’s slump is compounded by a long injury history that kept him off the field for more than 200 days. Even though he has regained his spot in the starting XI, he still hasn’t found the rhythm needed to break a drought that has now reached a full calendar year.
Off the pitch, Martín has faced criticism after comments in an interview suggested he was playing for himself rather than for the fans. The captain later clarified in the mixed zone that his words had been taken out of context: “What I meant is that you have to be right with yourself in order to bring joy to others; the fans are the most important,” he explained.
