América’s Álvaro Fidalgo is now listed as Mexican: Can he play for the national team?
Spain-born Fidalgo, who has been in Mexico since 2021, is being tipped for a call-up by El Tri ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

The Liga MX now lists Álvaro Fidalgo as a Mexican player - but the Club América midfielder is still not eligible for a call-up to the Mexico national team.
Fidalgo’s naturalization not yet complete
The Oviedo-born Spaniard is currently awaiting the issuance of his naturalization certificate, which is expected to be finalized in February 2026.
So, for now, Fidalgo continues to count as a foreign player on América’s roster. Until his naturalization has been fully rubber-stamped, he cannot play for Mexico or occupy a domestic-player slot on América’s squad.
A product of Real Madrid’s youth academy, Fidalgo has become a key figure in América’s midfield. Since joining Las Águilas, he has played in 205 matches, scored 21 goals, delivered 30 assists and logged over 16,300 minutes in the iconic yellow and blue.
Heavily linked with Mexico call-up
Thanks to his consistency, vision and technical skill, Fidalgo has been widely mentioned as a potential candidate for Javier Aguirre’s Mexico roster ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
The Mexicans are co-hosts of next year’s tournament, alongside Canada and the United States.
