World Cup 2026

Arda Güler’s World Cup is about more than Turkey, José Mourinho is watching

The Real Madrid midfielder carries his nation’s hopes into the tournament, but one influential figure has an even bigger reason to pay attention.

The Real Madrid midfielder carries his nation’s hopes into the tournament, but one influential figure has an even bigger reason to pay attention.

The World Cup was once about exposure for Arda Güler. Now it is something bigger: definition.

The 21-year-old Real Madrid midfielder, still wearing the No. 15 shirt in Spain, carries a very different identity for Turkey (Türkiye), where he wears No. 8 and serves as the symbolic heartbeat of the national team.

That responsibility starts immediately. Turkey open their tournament on Saturday against Australia in a demanding group that also includes the United States and Paraguay.

This is not a soft landing. It is a spotlight.

Mourinho is watching, and has been for a while

There is a second layer to Güler’s World Cup, one that stretches back to Istanbul and now reaches into Madrid.

José Mourinho is paying close attention.

During his return to Fenerbahçe, Mourinho already had Güler on his radar and even explored the idea of bringing him in on loan when the midfielder was struggling for minutes at Real Madrid.

He did not hide his admiration. At his unveiling, Mourinho made it clear.

“I would like to have Arda if he wants to come,” he said.

That interest has not gone away. It has simply shifted context.

Now, with Real Madrid planning ahead and working on a midfield refresh that includes a move for Bernardo Silva, Güler’s role is becoming more central, not less. The club is also expected to strengthen the midfield further, particularly with Dani Ceballos falling out of favor and likely to leave.

In that structure, Güler is viewed internally as a key creative piece in the next version of the team.

Turkey’s responsibility rests on his shoulders

For Turkey, the expectation is even more direct.

This is Güler’s first World Cup, and it arrives at a moment when he is already being asked to carry a disproportionate creative burden for his age.

What he has done so far at international level is rare.

At just 21 years, 3 months and 15 days, he has already reached 30 senior caps for Turkey, a pace that places him ahead of several of the country’s most highly regarded young talents.

Hakan Çalhanoğlu did not reach that milestone until his mid-20s. Caner Erkin needed until age 25. Nuri Şahin, once a Real Madrid player himself, did not get there until 23.

Güler’s trajectory is simply faster.

A rising valuation and rising expectations

That trajectory is also reflected in his market value.

Transfermarkt currently values him at around €90 million, roughly $104 million, a figure that could climb quickly if he delivers on the World Cup stage.

And that is exactly why so many eyes are on him.

Real Madrid are planning around him. Turkey are built around him. Mourinho is evaluating him.

Now, the World Cup becomes the test that connects all three.
