Argentina are at the gates of one of the most important moments in national team history. Lionel Messi will be eager to bring the curtain down on his international career by winning the greatest prize of all - the World Cup. It is the only major trophy he has never won - winning it would silence those who refuse to rank him alongside the great players who have: Pelé, Maradona, Ronaldo and Co.

Standing in the way will be the defending champions France. All eyes will be on Messi and Kylian Mbappé, but there are players on both sides who could end up stealing the limelight as both teams go out to prove that they are the best in the world.

Both Argentina and France have squads of players of enormous quality, but at AS.com has studied both to find out who has the most valuable squad, based on figures listed by the prestigious Transfermarkt portal.

Which squad is worth the most?

According to Transfermarkt, France’s 25-man squad is worth a combined total of €1.03 billion. PSG star Kylian Mbappé is clearly the most valuable player in the France squad with a market value of €160 million, double that of Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouameni.

Argentina meanwhile has a combined value of €645.2 million - almost half of what France’s squad is worth. Surprisingly, Lautaro Martínez, who lost his place in the side to Julián Álvarez, is the most valuable player, rated at 80 million euros. Messi meanwhile has a value of 50 million euros, being the third behind Cristian Romero (55 million euros).
