Update:

Cruz Azul is entering a new chapter as head coach Nicolás Larcamón officially takes the reins. Just days before the start of the Apertura 2025, sporting director Iván Alonso confirmed that forwards Giorgos Giakoumakis and Gabriel “Toro” Fernández will not continue with the club.

The Mexico City-based side will open up its Apertura campaign with a low-key clash on paper, facing Mazatlán this Saturday at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario. Despite the tournament’s imminent kickoff, the front office remains active in the summer transfer market, seeking to bolster the squad.

What is Cruz Azul’s expected 11 as things stand?

In goal, Cruz Azul is expected to rely on the experienced Kevin Mier, one of the standout performers in recent tournaments. The central defense will likely feature Willer Ditta and Jesús Orozco Chiquete, with Jorge Sánchez and Carlos Rotondi operating as full-backs.

The midfield trio is set to include Carlos Rodríguez, Erik Lira, and Lorenzo Faravelli. On the wings, Ignacio Rivero will attack from the right, while Mateusz Bogusz will take the left flank. With Giakoumakis’ departure, Ángel Sepúlveda is expected to lead the line as the starting striker.
