Atlético Madrid’s Julián Álvarez gamble: Why saying no to Real Madrid and Barcelona could backfire

Atlético rejected Real Madrid’s reported $175 million offer for Álvarez, but the club may now have little room to change course.

Atlético Madrid said no. No to Real Madrid. Just as it said no to Barcelona two weeks ago.

Two rejections amplified by social media, making them echo even louder. In today’s world, where everything is measured in clicks, likes and views, Atlético’s first post on May 29, intended to finally shut down rumors linking Julián Álvarez with Barcelona, became a phenomenon. The post jokingly offered Bad Bunny tickets and a bag of sunflower seeds in exchange for Lamine Yamal and had generated more than 76 million views on X as of Tuesday night.

The second came Tuesday, when Atlético reposted Real Madrid’s statement on the platform announcing a reported $175 million offer for Álvarez. That post surpassed 21 million views.

The offer was rejected.

Real Madrid acknowledged as much itself.

And that is where the danger lies.

Atlético can no longer afford to move away from that position. After such a public and emphatic rejection, the club would find it difficult to sell the Argentine forward for anything less. Summer has not even officially begun, yet it already promises to be a long one.

Atlético’s stance leaves little flexibility

Inside the Metropolitano, the message has remained unchanged. Álvarez is not for sale. The club is counting on him next season.

There is also his release clause, set at €500 million (about $575 million), the only figure that would currently force Atlético’s hand. In reality, the club would have little choice if that amount were paid. It is the one mechanism that automatically opens the exit door.

Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona have now received a clear signal. If Atlético turned down Real Madrid’s reported €150 million / $175 million offer, then the player is not available for that amount.

At least, that is the message Atlético has sent with its repeated public refusals.

It is also a position the club must now maintain.

Words versus actions

Atlético officials continue to emphasize another important point. Álvarez has never informed the club that he wants to leave.

According to those inside the organization, his behavior has been exemplary. But actions often speak louder than words. And in Álvarez’s case, those actions seem to point in a particular direction.

Last fall, in an interview with L’Équipe, he left the door slightly open.

“There is a lot of talk about me and Barcelona. For now, I am focused on Atlético. We’ll see what happens at the end of the season.”

The season has now ended.

Yet whenever Álvarez has been given opportunities to address his future, whether in postgame interviews or press conferences, he has stopped short of firmly declaring his intention to remain at Atlético.

That uncertainty has only fueled more speculation.

The Barcelona factor refuses to disappear

Álvarez is an extraordinary player.

He scores goals, creates chances and belongs among the world’s elite. Naturally, every major club wants him, and he has shown little desire to discourage the attention.

For months, Barcelona has appeared to be the destination most frequently associated with him.

That was the suggestion made by Argentine YouTuber Davoo Xeneize after spending time in Madrid with Álvarez and several other Argentine Atlético players. Without naming the player directly, he left little doubt about whom he meant.

“People already know who it is,” he said.

“He told me he has an offer from Arsenal, but there’s a better destination for him.”

Then came another hint.

“Can you imagine him playing there alongside Lamine?”

Whether those comments carry any real weight is open to debate. But they add another layer of complexity to what is already shaping up to be a difficult summer for Atlético.

Because beyond transfer fees, release clauses and public statements, there is another factor the club must manage:

The player’s own ambitions. Even if he has not expressed them publicly.
