Barcelona vs Manchester United summary: Raphinha goal, goals, stats & highlights | Europa League 2022-23
FC Barcelona vs Manchester United: as it happened
That's all, folks!
And we'll leave it there for the night.
Thank you for sticking by in what was an absolutely mental game of football - maybe my favourite all season!
Remember, we've got so much more football coming up, including the return leg next week!
Joe
Over 300 votes and little confidence!
It's going up! Now 69%of you think Barça won't make it past Old Trafford!
Here's the latest update on Pedri's injury.
Let's have a slice of that Rashford love!
What a performance from the forward - is he Europe's most dangerous player right now?
Pedri injury update:
Reports in Cataluña are saying that Pedri faces up to a month on the sidelines, meaning he would miss Cádiz, Manchester United, Almería, Real Madrid (Copa del Rey semi-final) and Valencia.
Manchester United caused them problems...
That's a lot of xG to concede for a team that has only let in 7 goals all season.
Erik Ten Hag post-match:
Why play Weghorst as a 10? "It's tactical, and brings other players into good positions."
"It was really bad [the penalty decision for Manchester United that wasn't given], I can't believe it; maybe it was the effect of a big game. It shouldn't be at the highest European level."
There isn't much confidence in the fanbase...
Way over 60% think that Barça will go out next week at Old Trafford!
Xavi post-match:
"It was a very intense and even game today.
They are a great team, but we dominated in many moments and in many spaces.
There were many chances for both teams; we could have won but the game at Old Trafford will decide everything.
We will go there and fight; the attitude from the team was spectacular today and we will go Manchester to try and go through.
They press well, they win lots of duels, it was tough sometime to build up, but we pressed high and had good chances, they make things tough for you.
I don't know [about Pedri], we will see tomorrow.
Raphinha came to apologise to me after the game. I understand why Raphinha was angry at being taken off, I was the same as a player. I don't mind them getting angry, I want them to want to play every minute.
I went and told the referee at the end that it was a penalty [on Fred handball]. For me it's clear.
We wanted to win, we had it close. It's a shame, but it was a very intense, close game."
How Sofascore saw the goals:
The Raphinha cross was a real thunderbolt, but Lewandowski's fabulous movement made it possible. Fantastic link up.
Not bad, Marcus!
He's on a simply incredible run of form and was the MVP of the game for me. His constant running and defence-splitting dribbles made the Barça fans sweat for 94 minutes.
Full time: FC Barcelona 2-2 Manchester United
Wow, what a fantastically crazy game at Camp Nou between two sides that threw everything at that.
Manchester United probably did enough to win but a moment of class from Raphinha and Lewandowski means that all is not lost for Barça as they head to Old Trafford both Pedri and Gavi-less.
That's the big news from today, that the Barça 8 has suffered a thigh injury and will undergo tests to determine the severity of the injury.
As for Manchester United, they caused innumerable problems for the home team, with Rashford looking like prime George Best on the wing and down the middle.
18 attempts for Barça and 17 for Manchester United shows just what a crazy game we saw.
And that's all!
Game over!
Corner for Barça...
Araujo heads towards goal and Malacia blocks.
Cleared.
We're into the final minute of the game.
ANSU JUST WIDE!
Gavi does well on the left and plays a pass inside to Ansu, who allows the ball to roll across him before hitting a shot that deflects wide.
Thankfully, De Gea takes his sweet time with a goal kick, allowing all of us to breathe and blink. Thanks, David.
BALDE FIRES OVER!
4 added minutes.
Ter Stegen saves a weak Rashford shot from the edge of the box.
The last minute of normal time...
Now it's time for the away side to attack with Malacia, who works well down the left.
Barcelona clear the danger.
This game is utter madness...
Wow, a free kick came in and bounced inside the box. All of a sudden, after a few failed clearances, the ball was hit onto the post by Casemiro before it bobbled across the line. Varane was the one who hacked it away.
Ansu got on the rebound and hit an electric shot towards De Gea who saved amazingly well!
WHAT A SAVE FROM DE GEA!!!!
OFF THE POST AND OFF THE LINE FOR BARÇA
THEY SHOULD BE WINNING
CASEMIRO ALMOST COSTS MANCHESTER UNITED
Huge handball shouts from the Barcelona players as the ball bounces inside the box. Let's see.
It looks like Fred touched it with his arm.
Nothing given.
Ansu to take...
Gavi wins a foul from a Casemiro challenge, who is on a yellow. The Barça players surround the ref to... actually, I'm going to leave it there.
Raphinha OFF (and he's not a happy bunny rabbit)
Ferran ON
Sancho OFF
Garnacho ON
ANSU FIRES WIDE FROM DISTANCE!
I CAN'T KEEP UP!
Shaw fails to connect with a header and Raphinha gets on the end of the ball but De Gea saves!
Aaahhhhh!!
Scary moments in defence from Barça as they play around at the back despite the huge surge of Manchester pressure.
Rashford gets the ball on the right but his shot is high and wide and Barcelona survive. Just.
It looks like a Raphinha goal!
He fired in a ferocious cross from the right and Lewandowski got in front of the defence to block the clearance and the ball flew into the far corner of the net!
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
BARCELONAAAA
LEWANDOWSKI SCORES AFTER A FANTASTIC RAPHINHA CROSS
15 minutes to go...
A frustrated Gavi gets booked when he pulls Fred's shirt as the Brazilian launches a counter attack. He will miss the next game.
Malacia does superbly well to get back and stop a Raphinha cross that came after the Brazilian had popped the ball through his legs in the previous action.
Barcelona haven't given up and still continue to try and push Manchester United back.
The problem is Rashford: he is such a danger on the counter attack.
FRED SHOOTS JUST WIDE!
De Jong and Ansu Fati have a mix up on the left which allows Fred to steal the ball and hit a powerful shot that flies just wide of the post.
Just over the bar from Lewandowski!
Free-kick coming up...
Alba and Kessie OFF
Balde and Ansu ON
Casemiro was also booked. No idea what for. Maybe being a general Dennis the Manace.
Erik ten Hag goes into the book for shouting nasty things to the referee.
The tackle from Kounde on Rashford WAS a foul, but as it was outside the box, VAR cannot intervene.
And now Barcelona have a free-kick right on the edge of the box as Gavi is fouled by... you guessed it.
Fred.
Rashford screams for a penalty after being brought down by a Barça defender. Another great run from the forward, who is being a source of eternal terror for the home team.
Marcos Alonso's terrible touch almost lets in Rashford behind the defence but the forward was so surprised that he too failed to control the ball.
Heart in mouth time at Camp Nou.
Wan-Bissaka gets the ball from a Rashford switch and rifles a shot towards goal that goes wide. Barça are not in this game right now, they need a spark.
Back underway.
And, just like that, they've flipped the game on it's head.
Rashford plays a one-two from the corner before twisting Raphinha's blood and firing in a cross which hits Kounde and bobbles into the goal.
Barça caught sleeping.
GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL
MANCHESTER UNITED
I'm not sure who scored it! I think it was a Kounde own goal.
Rashford gets the ball on the right wing again and tries a cross that is blocked out for a corner. He looks deadly right now.
Raphinha to cross in...
Weghorst heads out for a corner.
Barça win a free kick high up the pitch after another foul from Fred.
At least we get a breather for a second...
THE GAME IS BROKEN
Rashford almost makes it two for Manchester United before Raphinha forces a fantastic save from De Gea after a long range shot!
Back underway...
Rashford burns past Alonso after being played in behind by Fred in the right channel and the forward does not doubt his talent as he fires a low shot underneath Ter Stegen to silence the Camp Nou crowd!
He jumps highest at the back post and pokes a header past De Gea!
MARCOS ALONSO SCORES A HEADER FROM A CORNER!!!
CAMP NOU ERUPTS!
HOW DID SANCHO MISS THAT!?!?
Manchester United work down the right and the cross from Wan-Bissaka reaches Sancho who slices the ball wide from close range!!
What a chance!
RAPHINHA FIRES JUST WIDE
Fantastic play between Kessie, Gavi and Araujo on the right opens the pitch for the full-back, who plays in a cross that's cleared away to Raphinha.
The Brazilian, on the half-turn, spins and rockets a shot just wide of the post!
Barcelona start with some nice possession that ends with Shaw intercepting a pass from Araujo down the line to Raphinha.
And we're off!
Barcelona kick off the second half.
The players are back out!
Here we go again!
Well, that was a frantic game of football.
Both Barcelona and Manchester United have had amazingly good chances to open the scoring, especially Marcus rashford, who has shown us exactly why people say Ter Stegen is the most in-form goalkeeper in the world.
If the German is number one, then maybe the guy in the other goal is number 2, as De Gea has as well pulled off some fantastic stops from the Barcelona attack, which has definitely had its moments.
Pedri's injury, however, is going to be the big blow for the home side in this tie and going forward, as we are not yet sure how long he is going to be out for or exactly what injury he has.
And that's half-time!
Araujo makes it all the way to the corner of the box but his cross with the outside of his boot flies over Lewandowski's head.
2 minutes added.
Varane wins a race against Lewandowski after the Pole had taken a dangerously clever touch behind the defence. Not many will beat the Frenchman over 15 yards like that.
Gavi can't quite reach Raphinha's cross and it spins agonisingly away from him. That was a huge chance as the midfielder was in heaps of space in the box.
Gavi tripped by Varane, who is booked.
Pedri is sat on the bench, talking to Ferran. He looks rightfully annoyed.
Pedri comes off for Sergi Roberto. That's a muscle injury and a huge blow for Barça.
Oh, no. Pedri is down.
The crowd explodes as Raphinha is penalised for a trip on Malacia, despite the Brazilian being the player with the ball.
ALBA WITH A CHANCE!
BARÇA SO CLOSE!
Alba burns past Wan-Bissaka and flings a shot at De Gea who saves well from close range.
Camp Nou ask for a penalty as the right-back lunged in late.
Manchester United again. Barça need to wake up.
Bruno bounces a cross from the right to the penalty spot and Araujo makes a last minute challenge on Rashford to stop him firing a shot at goal.
RASHFORD SO CLOSE!
That was the most in form striker in the world against the most in form goalkeeper.
Rashford burned past Alonso down the left and Ter Stegen got out a fantastic hand to stop the whipped shot to the far post.
That was the football equivalent of two giraffes showing each other whose got the longest neck.
Barcelona clear a cross from Rashford who had made a silent run behind the defensive line.
The away side are dominating...
Bruno is down (again) and this time he's holding his ankle, after being kicked on the knee.
Alba booked for being a naught boy and reacting badly to a referee decision.
TER STEGEN AGAIN!
Bruno's cross is dangerous and Casemiro gets a light touch on the ball but the goalkeeper is on hand to save from close range!
TER STEGEN WITH A ONE VS ONE SAVE AGAINST WEGHORST!
The game has exploded!
Weghorst found his way behind the Barça defence after a Shaw pass through the lines and one vs one against Ter Stegen. Unfortunately for the striker, Ter Stegen is about the last person you'd want to come up against, who saves the powerful shot.
Kounde does well to clear an awkward ball that bounces right in front of him; Rashford was waiting to pounce.
HUGE CHANCE FOR MANCHESTER UNITED!
Wan-Bissaka makes a great run down the right and his cross is met by Sancho, who sees his shot go just wide after De Jong got a late touch.
Lewandowski's touch is just too heavy but he found space in between the centre-backs and almost managed to spin away.
Lewandowski is having some trouble with his wrist after Malacia made contact in an earlier challenge. One to perhaps keep an eye on.
Gavi avoids a yellow for a stupid, stupid challenge on Bruno Fernandes off the ball.
It was only a push and the Portuguese went down like a dying swan, but Gavi's a lucky boy nevertheless.
Corner to Manchester United after a hospital pass from Kounde is overhit and flies past Ter Stegen and out of play. A strange decision.
Cleared away. Raphinha presses well in the next phase to stop a quick cross being fired in.
PEDRI OVER THE BAR!!!
WHAT AMAZING FOOTBALL
Pedri and Gavi combine beautifully with a delightful scoop to the number 8 inside the box from Gavi. Pedri heads the ball backwards towards Lewandowski but Varane saves the danger from growing.
Pedri moves quickly to get on the end of the defensive header with a volley that flies over the bar.
Manchester United attack after a Kounde clearance and Malacia finds some space on the left, but he's well closed down.
Ten Hag is pretty much playing as a right winger, he's stood right on the touchline with the most serious facial expression I've ever seen.
Barcelona are competing well and are growing into the game after the early away chances.
They have just upped the tempo and the ball almost rolls through to the Polish goal monster up front, but he fails to read the brilliant pass from Raphinha.
Barça attack again, this time finding space on the left after a nice switch of play.
The crowd are happy with the performance so far, and Xavi must be too.
Pedri does well to win the ball from Fred who immediately steals it back by fouling the midfielder.
OVER THE BAR!
It went close but not close enough to force De Gea into making a save.
Alonso, Raphinha and Lewandowski are stood over the ball...
Alba get on the ball in a good area but his pass is poor and the attack breaks down.
Barça continue to attack and they win a dangerous free kick in a central area, just outside the box. Fred fouled Gavi.
Araujo wins the ball back and flicks to Raphinha, who plays it over the defence to Pedri.
The Spaniard smacks a low ball towards Lewandowski but Manchester United clear the danger. Good work again from the home side.
MASSIVE SAVE FROM DE GEA!!!
Lewandowski went so close!
He worked the ball well from a central area to the left of the box and his a ferocious shot from close range that De Gea got a strong palm to!
CHANCE FOR MANCHESTER UNITED!
Rashford hits a cross low to Bruno and Alba blocks the shot close to goal!
A huge challenge from Araujo, who has started amazingly well, stops the away side from building up on their left.
Kounde heads away a long ball from Shaw that was directed towards Rashford, who was in behind on his own. Eek.
The first 'whoop' of the night from the crowd after delightful skill from Araujo sees Raphinha able to burst forward down the right and get to the byline.
His touch is heavy and he runs the ball out.
Barça's press causes Manchester United some problems in buildup as De Gea's pass puts Malacia and then Shaw under pressure to play out in tight areas.
Kounde wins a foul in the middle of the pitch after nice footwork that tricked Fred into lunging in.
It's a frantic start from both sides...
Raphinha takes his first touches and flicks out a few step overs before driving in a low cross from the right. Manchester United clear it away.
A half-chance for the away side as Fernandes whips in a low cross from the right and Araujo slips and slides to get back quickly enough to see the ball out for a throw.
Danger signs early on...
It's Araujo at right back...
And we're off!
Maurizio Miriani blows his whistle and Manchester United kick off the game from right to left.
A moment of reflection is being held for the victims of the horrible earthquake in Turkey and Syria.
A scary omen for the away side
Lewandowski has an absolutely HUGE smile on his face as the Europa League anthem rings around the stadium...
They're out of the tunnel and onto the pitch - we're ready!
Barcelona XI:
Ter Stegen
Araujo, Kounde, Alonso Alba
Kessie, De Jong, Pedri
Gavi, Lewandowski, Raphinha
Manchester United XI:
De Gea
Malacia, Varane, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka
Fred, Casemiro, Fernandes
Sancho, Rashford, Weghorst
The players are in the tunnel...
We're almost ready to go!
The Barça team is being announced on the PA system with absolutely giant roars for each player. Camp Nou is rocking!
Here are all the games in this round of the Europa League:
But we know which one we're watching!
A real clash of two titans!
The clock is ticking, just 10 to go!
The last of the players have just hopped, skipped and jumped down the tunnel - that means we're almost ready to get going!
This could be interesting...
Journalist Adrià Albets is claiming that Araújo is set to start at right-back, instead of the usual centre-back position we're used to. It would put him up against Marcus Rashford, which is something we all want to see.
It would be a bonus as well as Kounde, who would be back to his preferred position in the middle.
Here are the lineups again:
Barcelona XI: Ter Stegen, Alba, Alonso, Araujo, Kounde, Kessie, De Jong, Pedri, Gavi, Raphinha, Lewandowski
Manchester United XI: De Gea, Malacia, Varane, Shaw, Wan-Bissaka, Fred, Casemiro, Fernandes, Sancho, Rashford, Weghorst
Goals, goals, goals...
Manchester United have scored 34 goals in their last 15 games and if you're a Maths wizard you'll know that's over 2 goals every match.
Barcelona's defence is going to be tested in a unique way tonight, they're up against a real life goal-machine.
The players are out to warm up!
And to huge cheers from the crowd!
Half an hour to go!
This Barça team are all fan favourites, I can't think of one that isn't liked by the majority of people in the city.
What is going to happen to Barça? Can they be relegated?
Well, not according to LaLiga chief Javier Tebas, who says they cannot receive sporting sanctions for what has happened. Check out why above.
Xavi's biggest disappointment so far?
Since Xavi took over as manager in November 2021, Barça have won just one of their seven matches at home in European competition. And that was against Viktoria Plzen.
They’ll need to banish those ghosts tonight if they are to keep the red-hot Manchester lot quiet, as they’ve quietly been mounting something of a title challenge back home with their fantastic form.
Here's how the two sides have got on against each other in the previous 13 meetings (although it feels like a lot more!).
Roddy has found some fantastic stats to keep you busy right up until kick off, which is only 45 minutes away!
Barça go in with a 1 goal advantage
OK; they don't. But maybe they should get one for Araújo's shirt of choice for tonight's arrival to the stadium - what a shirt!
We're on over 100 votes so far...
Join in on our AS English Twitter poll!
Who do you think is going to win?
At the moment it's quite tight, with just under 50% thinking the home team will get the win, but it's ticking down as we speak!
A quiet week in Barcelona...
OK, not the quietest they've ever had, it was a pretty stormy one as of yesterday, when it was revealed that Barcelona made payments to the the now ex-Vice President of the referee committee over a period of time.
Here is all the information we have on the payments and the absolutely collosal worldwide reaction it has caused:
And here's the Manchester United starting XI!
De Gea
Wan-Bissaka - Varane - Shaw - Malacia
Fred - Casemiro - Fernandes
Rashford - Weghorst - Sancho
Here's the Barça starting XI!
Ter Stegen
Kounde - Araujo - Marcos Alonso - Alba
Kessie - Pedri - De Jong
Raphinha - Lewandowski - Gavi
Who to watch:
I think the battle between the Barça defence and Rashford is going to be brilliant to see, with the Englishman having scored 13 goals in all competitions since football resumed after the World Cup, three more than any other player in the top five European leagues (Karim Benzema – 10).
He got 2 against Leeds in his last 2 games and looked unstoppable as a centre-forward, despite Erik ten Hag’s persistence with Wout Weghorst. Ronaldo Araújo has been one of LaLiga’s best defenders this season but he will be facing a challenge like no other when Rashford steps out onto the pitch
Barça vs Man United: pre-game stats:
- Manchester United have never beaten FC Barcelona at Camp Nou (D2 L3).
- Manchester United have won their last 5 European fixtures.
- Robert Lewandowski has been involved in 9 goals in his last 3 games against English sides.
- Barça have not lost a match against an English team since 2007, when they were beaten by Liverpool.
- The first meeting between the two teams was in 1994.
- Since then, they have faced each other 13 times, with Barcelona winning 6 and Manchester United winning 3 times.
Manchester United team news
Martial, McTominay and Antony have not travelled after missing training yesterday due to injury; van de Beek and Eriksen are long-term absentees.
Martínez and Sabitzer are both suspended for the game after receiving three yellow cards in the group stage.
FC Barcelona team news
Barcelona don’t have as many absentees as the away side but they have where it hurts: Busquets and Dembélé are both unavailable after picking up injuries during the past few weeks.
Hello and welcome to the Europa League knockout round play-off between FC Barcelona and Manchester United!
It’s Joe here and I’ll be guiding you through the action as it happens at Camp Nou.
What a juicy game of football we’ve got tonight, in years gone by this fixture was a Champions League heavyweight clash; right now, it’s perhaps a bit of a reflection on how things have gone over recent years for both of the teams. But we don’t care about that, do we? We just want the football!
