Hungarian player Barnabás Varga went down injured in the second half of their eventual 1-0 win against Scotland in their final Euro 2024 group game.

Around the 70th minute in the Group A tie, with the game goalless, a free-kick was sent in from the left and a clash between the Scotland goalkeeper, Angus Gunn, and Varga, sent the Ferencváros forward crashing to the ground.

The Hungarian Football Federation confirmed that he is conscious and stable and is at a hospital in Stuttgart.

What injury does Varga have?

Play was immediately stopped and paramedics rushed onto the scene, where a brown tent was erected around the player, with Varga’s Hungary teammates also forming a wall around the player in scenes reminiscent of the horrific incident involving Christian Eriksen during Euro 2022, when the midfielder suffered a cardiac arrest on the pitch.

The faces of the players, fans and technical staff, given that the medical work could not be seen, told a story of horror and worry as he received treatment.

Later, Hungary head coach Marco Rossi confirmed that “Barnabás Varga’s life is not in danger. He will undergo an operation after fracture in his face and he won’t be available for the rest of Euro 2024″.

After around ten minutes, he was stretchered off the pitch to applause from all four sides of the ground and taken to the nearest hospital for urgent care. Varga was replaced by Martin Ádám.

The latest reports say that Varga is in a stable condition at Stuttgart Hospital and is conscious.
