Bayer Leverkusen offer free tattoos for fans to celebrate historic season
The German club have confirmed the ‘Love that Lasts a Lifetime’ initiative for supporters keen to immortalise the club’s historic campaign.
With the clock ticking down in the seven minutes of added time at the Bay Arena on Thursday night, it looked that despite the 1-2 scoreline Bayer Leverkusen would seal their place in the 2023-24 Europa League final against Roma by virtue of their 0-2 first leg lead from the Stadio Olimpico but that the remarkable run of 48 games unbeaten would come to an end.
Up stepped Czech international Patrik Schick to fire Die Werkself level in the final minute of the seven added on and the jubilation among the Leverkusen fans went into overdrive as the club created a new record in European football, going unbeaten for 49 consecutive games.
With 2-2 draw against AS Roma, Leverkusen have now surpassed Portuguese team Benfica’s record from 1963-65 for the longest unbeaten run across all top-level matches since the introduction of European competitions and cements the incredible impact the appointment of Xabi Alonso has had on the club since taking over as head coach in October 2022.
Upon his appointment, the side were wallowing in the relegation zone and have now gone on to win the 2023-24 Bundesliga title (their first ever) and secure places in both the DFB Pokal and UEFA Europa League finals.
