The Mexican Women’s National Team made history in their participation in the Women’s Gold Cup by reaching the semifinals and defeating powerhouses like the United States. However, they couldn’t advance to the final of the tournament as they fell to Brazil 3-0, ending their participation in the CONCACAF tournament and their unbeaten streak. Brazil now face the USA, who needed penalties against Canada, in the final on Sunday.

Mexico’s Gold rush stopped by Brazil

La Tri had shown excellent performance on the field, achieving a record of 23 unbeaten matches. It was on 2 September 2022 when the Mexicans last tasted defeat, a narrow one against New Zealand in a friendly match, with CJ Bott scoring the only goal for New Zealand.

Following that defeat, the work of the coaching staff, management, and players began to yield results as the women overcame teams such as Poland, Chile, Nigeria, Puerto Rico, and the United States, and drew with Colombia, Costa Rica, among others. They also scored big wins against Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, and also come out on top against Angel City FC from the American league, 2-0.

In the Women’s Gold Cup, the work done in the Liga MX Femenil began to yield results as they tied with Argentina and defeated the United States, the Dominican Republic, and Paraguay. However, they suffered a setback against Brazil in the semifinals, losing 3-0 with one player less for part of the game. Next up for the national team are two preparation matches scheduled for the coming months against Colombia and Australia.
