One of the franchises that holds a prominent position in North America’s top division is LAFC. They are the reigning champions of the MLS Cup, having won in 2022, and in their relatively short history they have already competed in three international finals, including the Concacaf Champions League (twice) and the Campeones Cup 2023. Unfortunately, for their cause, they have not managed to secure victory in any of these competitions. Always the bridesmaid...

On Wednesday, LAFC faced off against Tigres UANL in a clash between the institutions that have secured the most prestigious titles in their respective leagues. However, once again, they fell short in their quest to claim a trophy beyond domestic competitions, leaving their fans disappointed at BMO Stadium.

How LAFC have fallen in finals

The first significant showdown occurred in 2020 when, amidst the covid-19 pandemic, the Black & Golds eliminated clubs like Club León and Club América from Liga MX on their path to the Concacaf Champions League. Nevertheless, they were defeated by León in Orlando.

Their second missed opportunity on the international stage happened earlier this year against the top-tier Mexican side, Esmeraldas, in the same competition. What made it even more painful was the loss on their home turf, following a lackluster performance in the final after losing the first leg in Mexican territory. This denied them the chance to celebrate in front of their home crowd.

The latest disappointment for LAFC occurred in the Campeones Cup, which was once again held in Los Angeles. After a goalless draw in regular time, the penalty shootout crowned Tigres as the victors. Once again, in their relatively short history, Steve Cherundolo’s team was left empty-handed.

What’s next for LAFC?

The closing stretch of the season will see Carlos Vela and Denis Bouanga’s team tasked with the mission of retaining their second-place position in the Western Conference. Therefore, it will be crucial for them to secure positive outcomes in their October encounters against Real Salt Lake (Sunday 1), Minnesota United (Wednesday 4), Austin FC (Saturday 7), and Vancouver Whitecaps (Saturday 21).
