Chivas del Guadalajara, with their 2-1 victory over Cruz Azul, have put themselves within a stone’s throw of tying the highest number of points they’ve ever obtained in the history of short tournaments with 34 points. Matchday 17 could see them achieve that with a victory over Mazatlán.

Chivas striving for more history

Now, under the orders of the Serbian Veljko Paunovic, the rojiblanco team is performing well and is now just one win away from equaling the record for the most points in short tournaments that they achieved three times before: in the Clausura 2004 , Invierno 1998 and Verano 1997.

So far, the Guadalajara team has added nine victories against Monterrey 0-1 on matchday 1, Juárez 1-2 on matchday 4, Tijuana 2-1 on matchday 7, Pumas 1-2 on matchday 8, Tigres 1-2 in game 9, Santos 2-0 in game 10, Necaxa 1-0 in game 14, León 0-2 in game 15 and Cruz Azul 2-1 in game 16, to reach 27 points as a result of the nine wins. Add another point each for the four draws against San Luis 0-0 on matchday 2, Querétaro 1-1 on matchday 5, Pachuca 1-1 on matchday 6 and Atlas 3-3 on matchday 13.

As stated above, the Rebaño Sagrado picked up 34 points in the Clausura 2004, Invierno 1998 and Verano 1997 tournaments, where they were crowned champions with the squad called Super Chivas, although note that 19 games were played in that 2004 competition.

How Chivas reached a record 34

In the 2004 Clausura, the ten victories were over Santos 0-1 on matchday 1, Atlante 1-0 on matchday 2, Pachuca 1-0 on matchday 4, Morelia 0-1 on matchday 5, Querétaro 2-0 in 6, Irapuato 2-0 in 9, Cruz Azul 4-3 in 13, Veracruz 1-4 in 14, UAG 3-1 in 15 and San Luis 4-1 in 19.

While in the Invierno 1998 tournament the ten victories were over Santos 3-1 in matchday 1, Necaxa 3-2 in matchday 3, Pachuca 1-2 in matchday 4, Pumas 1-0 in matchday 5, Morelia 3-4 in 7, América 1-0 in 8, Monterrey 4-2 in 10, Puebla 2-1 in 12, Atlas 2-4 in 13 and León 1-5 in 15.

Finally, in the Verano 1997 tournament, when they were crowned champions, they added nine victories over Morelia 2-1 on matchday 4, UAG 1-2 on matchday 8, Pachuca 2-0 on matchday 9, Atlante 1 -3 in 10, Atlético Celaya 3-2 in 11, Monterrey 1-2 in 12, Veracruz 1-0 in 13, Toluca 1-2 in 16 and Toros Neza 2-0 in 17.

In these previous three tournaments, only in two were they able to register ten victories, something that the rojiblancos could achieve in the current Clausura 2023 if they defeat the Cañoneros next weekend.
