Cristiano’s Al-Nassr looking to lure Chivas’ Fernando Hierro as director of sport
Saudi outlet ‘Al-Riyadiah’ maintains that negotiations between both sides are at an ‘advanced’ stage with efforts to sign Miguel Rubero breaking down.
The 2024 Liga MX Clausura season is offering a mixed bag for Chivas and despite some decent results as we saw last weekend with a 0-2 win against big spending Monterrey, the team sit in tenth in the overall table and were eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions Cup at the hands of arch rivals América.
Changes could be afoot at the Mexican club however with the news emerging from Saudi Arabia that Royadh based Al Nassr are looking to secure the services of Fernando Hierro as the director of sport for the Roshn Saudi League side.
According to Saudi Arabian outlet ‘Al-Riyadiah’, senior officials at Al Nassr have opened negotiations with Hierro after an effort to bring in Portuguese executive Miguel Rubero broke down.
After retiring from the game in 2005, Hierro was Real Madrid assistant coach before taking the helm at second division side Real Oviedo. His time at the Carlos Tartiere lasted just one season before he accepted a role working for the Spanish FA. In 2022, he crossed the Atlantic to assume his current role, that of sporting director with the Guadalajara side.
The Saudi outlet claims that talks between Cristiano Ronaldo’s club and the 56-year-old are at an advanced stage and that closure is expected in the short term. Both Saudi Pro Leagues and Liga MX Clausura are in the final stretches and with four games remaining, Chivas currently hold a ‘play-in’ position.
Fernando Hierro has worked with both Veljko Paunovic and current head coach Fernando Gago at Chivas and in his time in Guadalajara has overseen the team reach a Liga MX final, only to lose to Tigres in the 2023 Clausura.
