During the past few years, Erik Lira has established himself as the beating heart of Cruz Azul’s midfield. The Mexican international has done near‑exceptional work shielding the back line for La Máquina, a level of consistency that has made him one of the standout figures in Joel Huiqui’s current squad. Unfortunately for the Cementeros faithful, those performances have not gone unnoticed abroad. With the World Cup looming, all signs point to Lira having already played his final match in a Cruz Azul jersey.

With Erik’s departure seemingly inevitable, the club’s front office has wasted no time beginning the search for a potential successor. According to Rudy Galetti, a journalist who specializes in transfer news, Cruz Azul’s attention has turned to Jesús Castillo, a midfielder currently with Club Universitario de Deportes in Peru’s Liga 1. Castillo is enjoying an outstanding season with La U, one that has pushed him onto the international radar. Galetti reports that in addition to Cruz Azul, the Peruvian is also being monitored by Greece’s Panathinaikos, Brazil’s Internacional, and Spain’s Deportivo La Coruña.

What kind of player is Jesús Castillo?

Castillo profiles as a central midfielder with tremendous work rate and a natural ability to distribute the ball. At 24 years old, the Peruvian averages 53.5 pass attempts per match, playing a key role in his team’s buildup with an impressive completion rate. He doesn’t limit himself to simple exchanges, either, regularly looking to break pressure with 4.4 long passes per game to accelerate attacking transitions. Defensively, he provides balance through strong positional awareness, posting an average of 4.6 interceptions per 90 minutes.

Those numbers paint the picture of a midfielder who can both win back possession and initiate clean build‑up play - exactly the qualities Cruz Azul would need to fill the void left by Lira’s anticipated move to European soccer.
