Deyna Castellanos: from the Birthplace of California to the City of Roses
The Venezuelan was a free-agent after her 2024 campaign with breakout team Bay FC and will now look to kick-start her career with Portland.

Deyna Castellanos was a pioneering figure for women’s soccer in Venezuela. Her breakthrough inspired a younger generation in a country traditionally overshadowed by the men’s game.
Without having debuted in a professional league, and still a teenager, she was shortlisted in the nominations for the Ballon d’Or in 2017 and this later prompted a high profile move to Atletico Madrid in Spain.
However, over the years, the Maracay born striker has failed to hit the heights which her talent initially promised. After a single season with NWSL newcomers Bay FC, her contract was terminated and she will look to reignite her career with Portland Thorns.
“With the Thorns I want to get to that level that everyone knows I can reach. Bay FC was never against me leaving and they helped me a lot. It was all very easy and I would say they did a great job. Having different clubs interested and having the opportunity to choose to come to Portland was incredible.” she said after signing a new NWSL contract.
Her new deal runs until December 2026, with the option to extend for another year. After underwhelming spells with Atlético Madrid and Manchester City in England, Portland offers another opportunity for Castellanos to fulfil the promise she has so often threatened and will look to improve on her 2 strikes in 20 games with Bay FC.
Her roll-of-honour is centred in the early stages of her career: two South American championships (2013 and 2016), an NCAA national championship in the United States (2018), the Golden Boot at the FIFA U-17 World Cup (2014) and the FIFA award for best U-15 player (2015).
