Update:

The clock ticked down down at Lisbon’s Estadio da Luz. Atletico Madrid were moments away from being crowned champions of Europe for the first team as they faced city rivals Real Madrid leading 1-0.

Deep into stoppage time, ‘Los Blancos’ won a corner and in the 93rd minute Sergio Ramos latched onto the Luka Modric delivery to head past Courtois and take the final to extra time with Madrid going on to break the hearts of Atleti fans with a 4-1 win.

Since that memorable night in the Portuguese capital where Madrid secured their tenth European Cup, 93 has been a special number for Ramos with the veteran defender even having 93 tattooed on his head.

Ramos to Rayados

After being released by Sevilla FC last summer, the player has been a free agent and now appears to be on the cusp of a move to Liga MX giants Monterrey.

Club president José Antonio Noriega speaking on Radio Cope said that the deal is done but given the complexity of the transfer, there are a few minor details to be resolved before the Mexican club can make the move official.

It’s also been reported by Spanish journalist Juanfe Sanz that Sergio Ramos will wear the No. 93 jersey with the Nuevo Leon based outfit.

The move has caused indignation among Atletico Madrid fans who see the initiative as a provocation.

‘Ramos is being petty and provocative’ claims lifelong Atleti fan Juan Jose Mendoza and adds, ‘it shows just how much, we (Atletico) get under their skin’.

Real Madrid face Atletico at the Bernabeu this weekend with just one point separating the sides with the Madrid derby set for a 3pm (ET) kick-off on Saturday.
