The 2022 Apertura represents Henry Martín’s last chance to secure his place in the Mexico squad for the Qatar World Cup. The battles to be one of the Tri’s forwards at the World Cup is heating up with Santiago Giménez in a good moment and Martín not far behind - he responded at the right time to convince Gerardo Martino. Today, the América striker is the tournament’s top goal scorer as well as the most productive player in Liga MX.

With seven goals, Henry Martín tops the tournament goals ranking. The 29-year-old striker is on track to end a three-year absence of a Mexican player ending as the Liga MX’s maximum scorer - the last being Alan Pulido in the 2019 Apertura. There is no doubt that Henry is in a great moment and is now just one goal away from equalling his best regular season with América in Mexican soccer.

His good form not only translates into the tournament top scorers chart - he is also currently the most productive player in Liga MX. In the 11 weeks of action so far, plus a few of the Week 16 fixtures, Henry has created 11 goals (scoring seven and four assists) which makes him the most prolific forward in Mexican soccer; his closest rival is Toluca’s Leonardo Fernández who has played a significant role in nine goals, according to Be Soccer.

The most productive players of the Apertura 2022 (goals and assists)

  1. Henry Martin 11 goles
  2. Leonardo Fernández 9 goles
  3. Arturo González 9 goles
  4. Jea Meneses 7 goles
  5. Rogelio Funes Mori 6 goles
  6. André-Pierre Gignac 6 goles
  7. Nicolás Ibáñez 6 goles
  8. Diego Valdés 6 goles
  9. Lucas Di Yorio 6 goles
  10. Martín Barragán 6 goles

Henry Martin’s big moment

The azulcrema striker has participated in at least one goal for América in five consecutive Liga MX games. Against Juárez he scored a brace, against Pumas he collaborated with an assist, against Pachuca he scored a goal and gave another pass for a goal, against Cruz Azul he repeated with a goal and an assist, against Querétaro he gave another assist and against Mazatlán he was one of the three players on the score sheet in the 1-3 win.

Henry recovered his form in the summer tour of the United States, where América faced Chelsea, Manchester City and Real Madrid in friendlies. He found the net against Guardiola’s City and Real Madrid.

The bad news for Martín is that his goal scoring and assists streak could be cut short as he is currently doubtful for the game against Tigres, after complaining of discomfort after the Mazatlán match. His fitness issues also meant he misses a call-up from Mexico for Wednesday’s friendly against Paraguay.
