Here’s why Tchouaméni and Ancelotti were booed at the Bernabéu

The Madrid fans were waiting for him. Just eight minutes before kickoff, as the Bernabéu public address system announced the starting eleven for the Copa del Rey last-16 match against Celta Vigo, followed by the substitutes, a wave of boos swept through the stadium.

The target of the crowd’s disapproval was Aurélien Tchouaméni, singled out for his underwhelming performances this season as a center-back—particularly his poor showing in last Sunday’s 5-2 defeat in Jeddah.

The jeers grew louder, forming a chorus of whistles and shouts directed at Tchouaméni, who had already sensed the hostility. He had been booed earlier when he came out to warm up, though the reaction was milder at that point due to the stadium still filling up.

The fans’ frustration was clear. Against Celta, Tchouaméni returned to his more familiar position as a midfielder, but his reputation among the Bernabéu faithful had been tarnished since his weak display against Milan, where his errors contributed to a 1-3 home loss that handed the Rossoneri the advantage.

He wasn’t the only one under scrutiny. The reception for Carlo Ancelotti, following the Super Cup defeat, was also uncertain. When the Italian manager’s name was announced, the reaction was mixed: whistles interspersed with timid applause, though the uproar never reached the intensity aimed at Tchouaméni.

Throughout the beginning of the match, the French international continued to hear whistles whenever he touched the ball, underscoring the fans’ dissatisfaction.
