The quarterfinals of the Concacaf Champions Cup begins tonight and two of the winningest clubs in tournament history take the pitch tonight. In the second kickoff it’s Cruz Azul heading to Los Angeles to take on LAFC in one of four MLS vs. Liga MX matchups in this round of the CCC.

LAFC

The Californian side is one of four of the remaining MLS sides in the tournament and are looking to get back to the CCC final but this time they are hoping to win it all. They have enjoyed a fantastic start to their MLS campaign, winning eight and drawing two through 10 matches, and are coming off of a 6-0 thrashing of Orlando City over the weekend.

The club that made their debut in the MLS back in 2018 turns their attention to the Concacaf Champions Cup. They made the final in 2020, in just their third year in existence but just lost out to Tigers UNAL 2-1. They were able to get back to the final in 2023, but fell just short of their first CCC title falling to Club Leon de Mexico 3-1.

It was an easy first round for LAFC who demolished Real España of Honduras 7-1 over the two legs. That would set up a round of 16 matchup with LD Alajuelense of Costa Rica in what was a much tighter affair. After a 1-1 draw in LA, the black and gold had to go to Costa Rica and needed a stoppage time goal from David Martinez to advance to the quarters with a 2-1 win.

Cruz Azul

The Mexican giants are chasing what would be a historic eighth title in the Concacaf Champions Cup. They are not just tied for the most CCC titles in history but they are one of Mexico’s winningest clubs in history. It’s been a difficult start to the Clausura picking up just 18 points in 13 matches but they are focused on the international tournament looking to become the kings of the competition.

The Mexican club’s history in this competitions has been marked by eras of dominance. They won three CCC titles in a row from 1969 to 1971, but then went over two decades without lifting the trophy. They broke that streak in 1996, and repeated in 1997. Runner up finishes in 2009 and 2010 were followed by the sixth title winning campaign in 2013-14, and last year Cruz Azul won their record tying seventh title to join Club America as the most successful club in the tournament’s history.

The Liga MX side started their quest for an eighth CCC title against Canadian side Vancouver FC. They won 3-0 north of the border before returning home and winning 5-0 in the second leg. That set up an all Mexico tie in the round of 16 and a 3-2 win in the first leg away from home set up a tense second leg in which Cruz Azul held on 1-1 to secure their spot in the quarterfinals.
